Brain Burners Word Problems Packet
Math, Multiplication and Division, Division, Order Of Operations, Place Value, Grade 3, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Worksheets
This is a Brain Burners Word Problem Packet. These word problems are designed to allow students to use their own strategies for problem solving, regardless of how far from “typical” they might seem to you as an educator. You will be amazed at the ways students will find to get to a right answer. There is not one right answer for any of these problems. Students will fill in the missing pieces of the problem before solving them using any strategy that makes sense in their own brains. I generally use these as morning self-starters 1 or 2 times per week. You’ll want to do the first few as a group, showing examples of students who thought of different strategies, and doing a lot of talking about what you expect a final product to look like. Many students might be lost for the first several problems, but after seeing their classmates’ work, they will catch on. The first 20 brain burners are technically geared toward using addition and subtraction strategies (NBT), but higher-level students might use multiplication and division strategies as well. The next 20 are meant to follow the OA curriculum where students will use multiplication and division, but lower-level students may still opt for addition and subtraction. Students should be encouraged, if not required, to show their thought processes through pictures, graphs, charts, and/or equations. I will usually call on a few students to show their strategies and explain them to the class each time I do a brain burner, thus giving the rest of the class new ideas for problem solving. There are two formats for you to choose from. I prefer my students to have plenty of room to work with, but I know paper conservation is also important.

Math, Early Math, Multiplication and Division, Division, Preschool, Grade 1, 2, 3, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Activities
Multiplication Picture Problems for Primary Students (K-3) Here's a ready-to-print 8 page booklet for your primary students. It introduces the concept of multiplication with simple word problems that can all be solved by drawing pictures! It is made to be easily differentiated: some students may simply draw the pictures and count the answer, while others may try repeated addition, or even start to write multiplication equations. This product helps young students instinctively grasp the concepts integral to the more complex math skills of multiplication and repeated addition, but at at a developmentally appropriate level. It helps student practice the skill of visualizing mathematical situations. Sample Questions: One alien has 4 eyes. How many eyes do 4 aliens have? One cookie has 5 sprinkles. How many sprinkles do 4 cookies have? Each problem has 5 levels of differentiation: Drawing a picture Counting to complete a final answer: "4 aliens have ____ eyes" Completing a groups of sentence: " ____ groups of _____ equals ______ Writing a repeated addition equation: 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 16 Writing a multiplication equation: 4 x 4 = 16 You can assign all five levels or differentiate based on your individual students' needs (for example, the fox math group might do parts A through E and the butterfly math group might do parts A through C). Use this resource during whole group instruction or implement it during small group tutorials or even independent work from home. What's Included: A total of 9 pages. in PDF format: Teacher Instructions Student Booklet Title Page 7 Pages of Word Problems Grades to Use With: Because this lesson is designed to be accessible to even the youngest students, it could be used in grades kindergarten through grade 3. Financial Literacy: Mortgage Effects When Interest Rates Rise
Life Studies, Special Resources, Home Economics, Finance, Math, Percentages, Multiplication and Division, Division, Multiplication, Life Skills, Grade 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Worksheets & Printables, Word Problems, Teacher Tools, Lesson Plans
Everyone is talking about rising interest rates these days. But why does it matter? Should our students learn about this? Yes! Here's a complete ready-to-go lesson for high school students in math class, life skills, home economics, or career and personal planning. It will teach them all about buying a home, getting a mortgage, and how mortgage payments are calculated using interest rates. 1) First, there is a handout explaining all the relevant home-buying vocabulary: from down payment and mortgage to interest and principal. There is a complete handout or a fill-in-the-blanks version: you choose what is best for your students! 2) Then, there is a second sheet with a sample scenario of what happens when interest rates rise and people have to renew their mortgage. This clearly shows, step by step, how mortgage payments can rise by hundreds or thousands of dollars even if you live in the exact same place. This handout also has completed or fill-in-the-blank versions for you to pick from. 3) Next, there is a matching worksheet where students match all the home buying words to their definitions. 4) Finally, there is a math worksheet for students to complete. It has 10 questions for students to calculate themselves about down payments, mortgage payments and rising interest rates. Math skills required are multiplying and dividing with numbers up to 6 digits and working with percents written as a decimal. For example calculating the interest payment on a $300,000 mortgage at 3% would be done: 300,000 x 0.03 All the questions are designed to have round numbers and simply calculations whenever possible. Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed for high school students in grades 8-12: from special education to regular home economics classes. What's Included: 8 Page PDF: Title Page, 2 Pages of Handout, 2 Pages of Sample Scenario, Vocabulary Matching, Math Questions, Complete Answer Key If you enjoy this product, check out my Financial Literacy Activities like Household Budget Debit Cards vs Credit Cards Bank Statement and Credit Card Bill Practice
