This is a passage about the more "impossible" moments in Winter Olympic history. It is written on a 3rd-4th grade level and talks about the 1980 US Hockey Team and the 1988 Jamaican Bobsled team. These are two winter sports that the students are likely familiar with and the stories are interesting so it engages students while they read and answer questions. You can use this as a center, guided reading activity , homework, assessment, or just general reading check. The passage is available as a printable activity or there is a link to a Google Slides activity for students to complete digitally. An answer key is provided. The questions are written using 3rd Grade Virginia SOL question stems, however, they are appropriate for any student reading on a 3rd-5th grade reading level. Need more Olympics? There are many frames you can use for conferences to handout to parents PLUS lost of other sheets to keep communication lines You can choose which frames you might like to use for whatever purpose. I have my students draw a self portrait each report period and self-evaluate their progress for that timeframe.Parents LOVE to see the growthin the self portrait and we always get a giggle with what their child writes when filling out theself-evaluation form. I always start myconferences off with these 2 sheets somewhat like an ice breaker to ease into the conference. Every Friday for writing usually right after lunch, we write our Weekend News. We brainstorm ideas and then the children choose a frame and fill it in to bring home. It is somewhat like a weekly newsletter from the students. However, each child fills the frame in with their personal thoughts etc. The children have taped these in a journal and the journal goes back and forth from home and school to communicate what going on in school. Parents may write a letter back to their child if they so choose and then before we write our next journal entry we share either our own writing or our parent/guardian’s writing. Some students have chosen to write to an aunt, uncle, sister or brother. Any way you use these forms, will definitely makecommunication between home and School easy and fun!
