Reading Made Simple — Free CH Phonics Workbook These little workbooks have been a quiet favourite with families using Sound It Out Phonics for some time now. Each one focuses on a single sound and prints on just one sheet of A4 paper — double-sided, folded in half to make a neat A5 booklet that children can hold and work through at their own pace. They are entirely optional. The phonics programme works perfectly well without them, but many parents and teachers find them a useful companion — either as structured practice or simply as a source of ideas to dip into when needed. One 5-year-old user is quoted as having said, 'The worksheet is the best bit of my lessons!' Other parents have noted that their child likes the worksheet because 'they think it is easy'. When learning is broken down into small, achievable steps, with no curve balls to throw them off track, every child can say, 'I can read!' When I hear these reviews, I know that I have succeeded in my aim to write a phonics curriculum that can help children of all abilities learn to read and spell. These little workbooks are just one small part of what there is to offer. Please do check out the website for more information. Each workbook offers a gentle mix of activities built around the target sound. Children will read short passages that practise the new sound alongside words from sounds already taught, track and identify the sound within words to support both reading and spelling, practise spelling and sentence writing, and work through simple editing exercises where they spot and correct mistakes. These small editing tasks are particularly worthwhile — they encourage children to look carefully at words rather than guessing from context. The workbooks are particularly well-suited to younger children just beginning their phonics journey, and to older children with special educational needs who are still building their foundational reading and spelling skills. That said, they will not suit every child. Some will find them too long, others too straightforward. Use your own judgement — pick the activities that fit, leave the rest, or set them aside entirely. There is no obligation and no right or wrong way to use them. To print: print double-sided, flipping on the short edge. Fold in half to create your A5 booklet. The answer page at the back is optional. One sheet of paper. One sound. Everything a child needs to practise, consolidate and grow in confidence.

Breaking the Big Words | Volume 4, Set 2

A big focus for lower elementary students is learning how to read. This is a multi-faceted skill that comes with many layers for the teacher and the students to unfold. Part of the foundation includes syllable division. When students can identify syllable patterns and break words apart, they become masterful decoders. A child who can successfully decode words is ready to read! Here is a resource that gives complete focus to mastering this skill. Breaking the Big Words Activity Book is a syllable division activity series for students. This is Volume 4, Set 2. The focus is: Syllable Patterns: V/V Syllable Types: Open and Magic e Number of Syllables: 2-3 This set is meant to make students feel successful because: · Syllable patterns are introduced in a specific order to ensure students master a single syllable type with blends and digraphs before moving on to the next type. · As students reach mastery with recognizing and decoding each syllable type, the next will be introduced. Scaffolding: · Multiple visual supports utilized to ensure independence and confidence with the strategy. · As students are able, supports are removed to foster independence. Parts of each activity: · New Words: introduced during this activity. · Review: Familiar syllable types and patterns for practice and maintenance. · Break Before You Read (word list): The step following syllabication is the informal “break.” Students insert a slash to separate syllables This occurs prior to reading. · Break While You Read: To further generalize the “break” strategy to reading. Students read two sentences and “break” words as they come to them. Add additional levels of generalization as students progress: · Ask students to “Break While You Read” with a decodable text, a story excerpt, content vocabulary, or a sentence on a worksheet. · Fade the last support (the steps to divide syllables) by asking students to copy and divide a word on notebook paper or white boards. This practice set is a real hit! First of all, get two vocabulary lists that feature all of the words from this set. And there are two of them. One with all of the words in alphabetical order and the other one in order of frequency. Once your students have memorized all of these words, it is time to put them to the test. You are able to do this with the included fill in the blanks exercises. This also includes an answer key that can be used to check each and every of the given answers. Apart from that, there is also a word search. This makes practicing these words a whole lot more fun. And there is another fun activity. This is wacky words, where all of the sight words got mixed up. It is now up to your student to put the letters in the right order.
