Reading Fluency and Comprehension Passage: Grade 2/3: OO Words

Reading Fluency and Comprehension Passage: Grade 2/3: OO Words
Common Core, Reading, ELA, Reading Comprehension, Special Education Needs (SEN), Special Resources, Grade 2, 3, Worksheets & Printables

This is a reading fluency passage based on words in the 'oo' family, which doubles as a reading comprehension activity. It is suitable for a reading age of Grade 3. The target 'oo' words are: fool cool wood afternoon stoop swoop/ed smooth goodbye hook unhook gloomy choose loose (ex) rook rookery cookery crook brook balloon kangaroo The words are listed on a chart for practice. The passage uses mainly decodable words, making it suitable for the dyslexic pupil. Aims and objectives: To help the pupil gain confidence in sounding out to read more advanced words in the 'oo' family than those learned in previous grades To read the words in context and so establish their meaning To read the passage fluently To understand the key themes in the passage Method: The pupil first finds all the 'oo' words and underlines them. The pupil then reads the passage three times, colouring a star each time. The pupil then answers the questions. Usage: The reading fluency practice with an added comprehension exercise is suitable for higher-attaining Grade 2 pupils, or for lower-attaining Grade 3 pupils who may need more extended phonics teaching. It was written for a dyslexic pupil. It can be used in class or in small groups. It can be used in the homeschool or by a tutor. I wrote this passage for a dyslexic, older child who was reading delayed, but is now making progress since I extended his phonics skills to incorporate more complex words. We first study a word family, and then read the words in a short passage. As a byproduct, his spelling skills improve alongside his reading. If you have a child who is behind in reading, try doing the same. We tend to teach the basic phonics sounds with words appropriate for a young child and expect the child to automatically apply it to longer words as they age. This does not always happen automatically for the dyslexic pupil.

Healthy eating and budgeting are key life skills that need to be taught to our middle school students in grades 5-8. Here's a fun, interactive lesson that can do just that! Students are tasked with creating a personalized meal plan using a $30 budget for the day. They are given 20 food options for each of three meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) with the prices provided (based on a Canadian discount food store). They plan which items they will buy for each meal while following some healthy and budget-friendly rules: each meal must include a vegetable or fruit each meal must make some leftovers to be eaten another day all three meals must not exceed the $30 budget Students can approach this task in different ways. They might decide to use $10 for each meal, or plan two cheaper meals to be able to have one that is more expensive. They might have to change their plan as they go, put back a sweet treat they don't really need, or switch to a cheaper option to stay in budget. These are all helpful, real-life math and life skills! What's Included: Teacher Handout with instructions on how to use the lesson. Student Handout to brainstorm ideas for healthy shopping and staying on budget. 3 Pages of Worksheets: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner: Each with 20 food options, a shopping list, place to add up the total cost of the meal, and some reflection questions. Final Budget Page: Students add up the cost of all three meals and write a paragraph to reflect on the shopping for healthy choices on a budget process. Grades to Use With: This lesson is perfect for students in grades 5-8 who are learning decimal operations and starting to learn about life skills. It could also be used in a high school special education classroom if the students are able to complete decimal operations (calculators can be used).
