About this resource
What's inside this resource
Food Crosswords (PDF) gives grades 2–5 five food-world crossword puzzles that move from the kitchen to the restaurant table. Students name kitchen tools such as a colander and a whisk, describe tastes and textures, trace food back to dairies, ranches and greenhouses, pack a picnic lunch, and finish with restaurant words like reservation and appetizer.
Clues read like small everyday moments: squeezing tongs to grab sausages, a lemon wedge that scrunches your face. Each puzzle page carries one true food fact, from taste buds that renew every two weeks to the two-hour rule for picnic food, followed by a short writing prompt that puts the puzzle words to use. The last puzzle ends with Menu Maker, where students use at least four answers from the set to write a three-dish lunch menu with a describing word for each dish.
- Grades 2–5: food vocabulary, nutrition and life-skills centers, early finishers
- Seven pages: five puzzle pages plus a two-page key with completed grids and sample answers
- Make it easier: an answer strip for each puzzle, in ABC order, on the second key page
- Printing: a color PDF and a black-and-white PDF are both included

Before Puzzle 2, ask students to describe a snack they ate today; the Your turn prompt asks for two taste words.
Skills covered
Describing words: Tastes and Textures asks students to tell sour, bitter, tangy and creamy apart from short scenes.
Food origins: the Farm to Table puzzle links grocery items to fields, dairies, ranches and greenhouses.
Everyday reading: clues set in a kitchen, a park and a restaurant give practice reading short, concrete sentences.
