About this resource
What's inside this resource
Fall Crosswords (PDF) is a set of five themed crossword puzzles for grades 2–5, one puzzle per page, that mixes autumn science with everyday seasonal vocabulary. Puzzle 1, Shorter Days, covers the equinox, Earth's tilt and orbit. Puzzle 2 follows seeds, nuts and pods as they travel away from the parent plant. Puzzle 3 shows insects getting ready for the cold, from monarchs to ladybugs. Puzzle 4 moves into a cozy fall kitchen, and Puzzle 5 closes with back-to-school words.
Each puzzle has eight clues written as short scenes rather than dictionary definitions, with the letter count shown after every clue. A "Did you know?" card on each page shares a true fall fact, such as coconuts floating across oceans or people once erasing pencil with balls of bread. On Puzzles 1–4 that card ends with a one-sentence writing prompt that asks students to use a puzzle answer. Page 5 adds a Fall word challenge: three answers from any puzzle in one sentence about the student's week.
- Grades 2–5: seasonal vocabulary, early finishers and fall centers
- Seven pages: five puzzle pages and two answer-key pages with filled grids, answer lists and sample sentences
- Support option: word bank strips for each puzzle on the key
- Two PDFs: full color, plus a print-friendly black-and-white copy

Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Read a short scene-style clue and spell the matching fall vocabulary word.
Use letter counts and crossing letters to check spelling.
Explain how shorter days, seed travel or insect preparation connect to fall, in one written sentence.
Teaching tips
Read the one-line direction strip with students before Puzzle 1: start in numbered squares, Across goes left to right and Down goes top to bottom.
For students who need support, cut out the word bank strip for that puzzle from Answer key 2 and hand it over.
Point out that the number in parentheses after each clue is the length of the answer.
Skills covered
Season science vocabulary: students meet words such as equinox, hemisphere and orbit through clues tied to what they notice in fall.
Life science words: seed and insect puzzles name real fall changes, such as a samara twirling down or a monarch flying south.
Spelling with clues: crossing letters and letter counts help students confirm longer words like chrysalis and September.
