How to Make Popcorn | Writing and Sequencing Activity
ELA, Writing, Grade 1, 2, 3, Activities
This cross-curricular resource uses students' interest in popcorn to teach early writers fundamentals of crafting step-by-step "how-to" explanations. The materials creatively break down the process into simple sequences designed to motivate young students. Various printable templates guide children to color, cut out, organize, and describe the methodology for popping this popular snack. The packet incorporates two leveled writing checklists suitable for kindergarten through early elementary grades to reinforce core instructional writing skills. A sample how-to paragraph models the format while a popcorn-themed sequencing word bank introduces key transition vocabulary. Vivid pictorial cards demonstrate necessary tools and steps while corresponding word cards allow for matching games or displays. Primary workbook-style templates encourage students to enumerate or depict the tools, ingredients, safety considerations, and chronological actions required to pop popcorn. Extensions guide students to describe favorite movie snacks, tailor recipes, or invent new varieties of popcorn. A final draft popcorn bag template offers the possibility of designing customized packaging if classroom cooking facilities permit. With opportunities to grow fine motor skills, sequence events, practice transitional phrases, apply controlled writing, and craft snack-inspired narratives, students gain confidence applying fundamental how-to writing techniques to an appetizing topic that stimulates imagination. The cross-disciplinary focus creatively integrates science and literacy learning through hands-on engagement centered around a beloved snack. This educational product equips teachers with abundant resources to guide students through crafting procedural "how-to" texts using the fun example of making popcorn. Two colorful anchor charts define the key ingredients of quality procedural writing and offer transition words to sequence steps. Editing checklists, provided at two levels, enable learners to self-evaluate work before publishing final drafts. A sample "How to Make Popcorn" models conventions like imperatives, chronological order and materials lists. Sequencing tasks with accompanying illustration cards ─ available with and without text ─ reinforce ordering of popping steps. Writing templates scaffold multiple angles, from brainstorming needed tools to recounting personal experiences making the tasty snack. Budding authors draft procedural passages within primary-lined booklets showcasing pictures to color. Final publications shine with the option to cut out mini popcorn buckets demonstrating the delicious outcome! Math Doubles Plus One Fact Activities
Math, Numbers, Grade 1, 2, Activities, Games
Math Doubles Plus One Fact Activities Fun is differentiatedand has3 different math levelsfor your use. This isbest as a partner game but can be used with a small group. Each child will need theirown card and tokens to cover their answers; such as, pennies, teddies, cubes of whatever you have around the room. If youlaminate the cards, which is suggested, you can have the children use wipe off markers and crayons to X their answer. Run off enough cards for the number of students playing the game and laminate. Each partnership or group needs one die. Directions for Use: ♥ The first card has only numbers or sums, which is the easiest level. Since the student just has to add the numbers together and cover the sum. ♥ The student will roll the die, double the number, add 1 and then cover the answer. For example. The child rolls a 6 (You may provide a manipulative, such as a number line or grid to support learners). ♥ The second card has the number model. ♥ With this activity the students roll the die and cover the equation or number model that shows a doubles plus one fact. For exampleif the student rolls a 3, then they would cover the number model 3+4 or 4+3. This requires a bit more higher order thinking. ♥ The third card has harder number models and would need to be used with a polyhedral dice that goes up to 12. ♥ The fourth card is blank so you can differentiate however you choose. You may even want the children to write the facts or sums that might go with different dice. For exampleif you are using a polyhedral die that goes up to 12, then the sums could go up to 25. It is yours to create whatever works for your class. It can even be a wipe off if laminated. ♥ The last worksheet is to check the student’s metacognitive thinking which is so important with state tests. Having children explain their thinking helps the teacher see how the student’s mind works. It is almost like a video camera and you can see where the breakdowns are or just how they are thinking and support as needed. Some children may need to do this verbally. ♥ I have also asked for the Name, date and time on the bottom of this sheet. I have experienced that many children have difficulty reading an analogue clock so this provides ongoing practice with writing a telling time from an analogue clock. Please note: The cards are the same because the dice determines the outcome. You will need to run off enough copies of each for your students.Check out some other math products you might like:

Ideal for both native and ESL students in grades K-2, this printable game strengthens vocabulary around food concepts. To play, students take turns rolling dice and moving spaces. They read the prompt aloud, then verbally share or write their response. Teachers can modify gameplay for pairs, small groups, or whole class participation. Options include responding individually, with a partner, writing questions and answers, or racing to the finish. This versatile resource allows teachers to assess student progress through one-on-one conferencing. Using themes like food makes retaining new vocabulary words more meaningful.
