Middle School Math Stations or Centers: Adding and Subtracting Integers
Math, Number Lines, Addition and Subtraction, Subtraction, Measurements, Grade 4, 5, 6, 7, Centers, Activities
Math stations are a great way to get students engaged as they move about the room and work collaboratively with their peers. But they are a lot of work to prepare! This ready-to-go set of 5 stations will supplement a unit about adding and subtracting integers. Ways to Use: You can break your class into 5 groups and have them rotate one at a time through the centres, giving them 10-20 minutes at each one. Or, start students at certain centres and then allow them to move around at their own pace as long as no one centre gets too full. I find these are a great resource as you are finishing your unit and preparing for the unit test. Station 1: Students solve four realistic word problems using integers. (optional: set out white boards for students to use) Station 2: Students play a dice game to practice adding and subtracting integers. (supplies needed: 2 dice per pair- they must be different in some way so one can be + and one can be -) Station 3: Students compare temperatures in two cities (in degrees Celsius) and create a number line. Online game extension. (supplies needed: laptop or tablet) Station 4: Students use integers to decide if a football team would score a touchdown based on 8 plays. Station 5: Students do an integer drill and explain their thinking about integers in words. Grades to Use With: These stations will work well in grades 4-7 or high school special education classrooms. Standards: CCSS6.NS.C.5 Understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite directions or values (e.g., temperature above/below zero, elevation above/below sea level, credits/debits, positive/negative electric charge); use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in real-world contexts, explaining the meaning of 0 in each situation. Career Exploration: Inquiry Project
Special Resources, Life Studies, Life Skills, Career, Research, Grade 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Activities, Projects
Through Career Exploration: Inquiry Project students will explore careers in different sectors including: - Healthcare - Business - Government - Education - Technology - Entertainment - Tourism - Construction However, this project encourages students to think outside of the box and research some more unique options instead of just the stereotypes. Instead of doctor in healthcare, what about phlebotomist, heart valve specialist, or paediatric nurse? Instead of president in government, what about speech writer, social media expert, or municipal clerk? There are so many jobs out there that students don't even know exist. How can they plan properly for their future without all of the facts? Each student will be assigned one sector. They will think of three stereotypical jobs in that field and then do research to learn about four more unique options. For each one, they need to find out the education required, the experience and skills needed, the daily tasks, and the pay. At the end, they will choose their favourite option from the four they have researched. How to Use: Assign a career sector to each student or pair. Give them time to complete research and fill in their chart . Have students or pairs present their favourite unique career they found in a simple powerpoint presentation so the whole class can learn about the variety of options available! Grades: This project is great for high school students (grades 8-12) in regular or special education classes. It would work well for a career and personal planning course! Book Browse: Teach Your Students How to Choose a Book to Read
ELA, Literature, Reading, Grade 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, Activities
The purpose of this 6-page lesson, Book Browse: Teach Your Students How to Choose a Book to Read is to teach students in grades 4 through 9 how to browse for a book to read. Many of our students are not sure how to choose a book to read. They might not have many books in their homes or they might not go to a library or bookstore. We have to teach our students how to browse a book to see if they might want to read it. I take my students to our school media center /library once every five or six weeks, and we always book browse. Sometimes we browse a specific genre, such as Historical Fiction or Narrative Nonfiction. Other times it might be Newbury Awards or bestsellers. Students enjoy this activity, and over time, they feel very comfortable browsing for books on their own.Every time we go to the library after this first time, students ask if we can do a book browse. Some teachers might think it’s a waste of a period, but I am an avid book browser at the library and in bookstores, and I have found many authors that I wouldn’t have if I hadn’t browsed. The structure that this lesson provides is very useful if you’re doing a genre study or a literature circle. But even if you just want your students to have a book of no particular genre, giving them choices within a somewhat limited framework (rather than having them wander among the shelves looking or pretending to look), helps them make informed choices and gives them some agency at the same time. This activity offers students the opportunity to find books they might enjoy. Although this lesson is specifically designed for a school library, if you have an extensive classroom library, you can easily book browse in your classroom. I have produced a number of book reports that you might be interested in.
