Hiroshima (2005): Complete Video Guide for BBC Documentary
Social Studies, History, History: USA, History: World, Grade 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Activities, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

When we dive into the 20th Century's key moments with our students, the deployment of the first atomic bomb undeniably stands out. Grasping the gravity of this event can be challenging, but there's a drama-documentary that's proven invaluable in my classroom to bridge that understanding. This isn't just a film—it's a journey back in time. Over three pivotal weeks, from the test explosion in New Mexico right up to the heart-wrenching moment the bomb descended on Hiroshima, the documentary offers an immersive experience. Through its lens, our students can: Step into the decision-making rooms, feeling the weight of the world on those leaders' shoulders. Sense the palpable tension aboard the Enola Gay. Witness the staggering force of the bomb's detonation. And, perhaps the most evocative of all, walk the streets of Hiroshima, absorbing the immediate aftermath. For those of us aiming to ensure our students don't just watch, but truly engage and reflect, the accompanying movie guide is a gem. With its 37 targeted questions, it not only directs attention to the crucial details but also fosters deeper thinking and classroom conversations. And, having a teacher's key on hand? It's been a game-changer for streamlining my prep. I can't recommend this documentary enough. It's not just about recounting historical events; it challenges students to think, question, and discuss the profound implications and differing perspectives surrounding the bomb's use. This print-ready movie guide is a straightforward addition to our toolkit, enhancing our efforts to bring history alive in the classroom. The movie is available on Netflix: Hiroshima BBC History The link is also available here: BBC History Thumbnail clipart from: clipartlogo.com

Parallel & Perpendicular Lines: Transcription Tic-Tac-Toe Game

Parallel & Perpendicular Lines: Transcription Tic-Tac-Toe Game
Math, Geometry, Grade 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Activities, Games

Transcription Tic-Tac-Toe is a learning game that uses reading, writing, speaking, and listening, all in one activity! It is part of a group of strategies called sheltered language strategies. Sheltered language strategies are teaching strategies that focus on teaching academic vocabulary at the same time as academic content. These types of strategies have been researched and shown to improve student learning, especially for ELLs. When students participate in this activity, they are explicitly required to interact with both academic language and content at the same time. The process of transcription involves listening to verbal input and producing writing based on the information that is heard. Example: Player #1 will say (reading from their Transcription Script) "Write the equation of a line in slope-intercept form that is parallel to the line y=7x +2." Player #2 will listen and then write (recording on their answer sheet) y= 7x + (any number other than 2). HOW TO PREPARE MATERIALS FOR TRANSCRIPTION TIC-TAC-TOE Students work in teams of 2. One person is Player #1 and the other person is Player #2. Step 1:Print the Transcription Script for Player #1 back-to-back with the Transcription Tic-Tac-Toe Answer Recording Sheet for Player #1. Do the same for the two documents for Player #2. Each student gets their own copy of each of the two sheets. Step 2: Print copies of the Transcription Tic-Tac-Toe Board. Option #1: You will need one copy per team per round. There are enough questions for 3 rounds, so print 3 copies per team. Option #2: Laminate copies of the Transcription Tic-Tac-Toe Board and have student teams write on the laminated boards with dry erase markers. You will need one board per team. Option #3: Have students use a white board to play the Tic-Tac-Toe game. Option #4: Have students use a piece of regular notebook or printer paper to draw in their own Tic-Tac-Toe grid. HOW TO PLAY TRANSCRIPTION TIC-TAC-TOE Students work in teams of 2. If there is an odd number of students in your class, consider allowing a group of 3 in which two students share the role of Player #1. Player 1 begins and reads question 1 from their Transcription Script to Player 2. Player 2 listens to the the instructions and writes the answer on their own Answer Recording sheet. Player 2 is allowed to ask Player 1 to repeat the question as many times as is needed and reasonable. Player 1 checks Player 2’s answer using Player 1’s answer key. If Player 2 answered correctly, they get to play first on the Tic-Tac-Toe board by putting an ‘x’ or an ‘o’ in a space of their choosing. If Player 2 answered incorrectly, they lose a turn. Repeat the process with Player 2 now reading question #1 from their Transcription Script to Player 1. The first player to get three x’s or three o’s in a row wins that round. If neither player gets three in a row, that round is considered a tie. Continue switching roles back and forth, playing a new round once the previous round is completed or until all of the questions have been used. If students are able to, they can create their own similar questions and continue playing once they have used all of the questions that are provided.

Designed specifically for the 1:1 classroom utilizing any kind of digital device such as Chromebooks, Cellphones, or Tablets. This resource comes packed with 18 engaging activities spread over 27 interactive pages. It covers the Particle Theory to chemical compounds and includes a teacher answer copy. Each page was created to look and feel like a traditional notebook but was designed to take advantage of everything that digital brings. Digital Interactive Notebook for Google and OneDrive cloud services. If you don’t currently have a Google account, you can sign up for one completely free and get started in 5 minutes. If you’re a OneDrive user, no problem. Simply download the notebook as a PowerPoint file to your computer then upload it to your OneDrive account. The majority of the items in this resource are fully editable. In addition, slides can be added or removed easily to suit your classroom needs. I feel that the most effective way to see what you’ll receive is to actually access it, play with it, and that way, you’ll know if it’s right for your classroom. To do that, I’ve made available a sample space interactive notebook you can access by CLICKING HERE This Digital Interactive Notebook is broken down into 5 chapters. Chapters can easily be removed if they don’t correspond to your curriculum needs. The following chapters are included with your purchase. Chapter 1 - The Particle Theory and Classification of Matter Chapter 2 - Atomic Theory Chapter 3 - Atomic Structure and Notation Chapter 4 - The Periodic Table Chapter 5 - Chemical Symbols, Formulas, and Compounds THEN: Before computers, we used interactive notebooks to engage our students and keep their notebooks organized and accessible. This however required a lot of material and the unwelcomed task of lugging them all home with you to mark. But we used them because they were effective and allowed us to effectively assess our students understanding. NOW: Why use digital interactive notebooks? As prices decrease, many schools are moving towards a 1:1, computer-student ratio and are becoming digital, the way we teach needs to keep up. You don’t even need a class set of computer, a personal device (cell phone, laptop, tablet, etc. will work just as well). Digital interactive notebooks provide all the same means of organization and assessment but without the physical notebook. This… 1) Saves you from bringing them back and forth/storing them in your class. 2) Purchasing all the necessary supplies. 3) Having them get lost, misplace pages, etc. Once you purchase, you’ll get a direct link. This link will allow you to place your own copy of the digital notebook into your Google Drive folder. From there, simply distribute the file to your students. No notebooks, no glue, no scissors, not even a USB in sight. Everything is stored and can be assessed in the cloud from any computer in the world. If your students go on holiday, they can access it. If they’re sick, they can access it. What activities will you find inside my Digital Interactive Notebooks? • Interactive drag-and-drop activities • Embedded Videos that play inside the slides along with questions • Calculation questions • Audio recorders – students record and upload their own auditory answers to questions • Fill-in-the-blanks • Drawings – students create their own drawing then easily upload them to their slides using their device or computer • Research questions • Extension questions for early finishers, those wanting extra credit, or incorporated into the mainstream assignment • Vocabulary check on the entire unit • Lots more Click here to get immediate access to a sample file so you can see exactly what’s being offered → http://bit.ly/TWF-DINB . Keep in mind that the sample file is for my SPACE notebook but it does give you a good idea of how the resource is structured. What if my school won’t pay for Google products or access to Google Classroom? No problem, G-Suite as it’s called, is completely free and includes everything you’ll need to access your digital notebooks. What if your students don’t have internet access for some reason? These notebooks can easily be made available off-line for access anywhere. Left-side/Rights-side. Is there a place for students to include their own notes? Yes! That’s the beauty of going digital. You don’t need a left and right side. When you or your students want some more room, just add a slide and go to town. Worried about plagiarism? I use turnitin.com to ensure my students are submitting their own work. However, I attempt to make these as interactive and individual as possible, which all but eliminates cheating. Do you feel that your students will miss out on the hands-on experience they receive from traditional interactive notebooks? In today’s world, I don’t think that’s a concern. Your students are and need to be well versed in the world of technology and how to manipulate it to suit their needs. This resource will help.
