Product description

From the author

This letter-J picture game includes one color board and one black-and-white board. Players roll a die, move around the outer track and cover a matching picture in the 20-space center. The printed goal is to cover all the pictures.

Provide a die, a player piece for each participant and counters. Name the pictures and practice their beginning J sound before or during play. Use the game independently, with a partner or in a literacy Center.

Optional variations from the contributor include connecting four, covering spaces within a time limit, comparing the number covered, or racing to cover ten. Agree on the chosen goal before starting. The four-page PDF includes the two boards, a thank-you page and credits.

Teaching tips & learning objectives

Learning objectives

  • Move a game piece around a board by rolling a die and advancing the corresponding number of spaces.

  • Match a landed space to its corresponding picture in the center of the board.

  • Build turn-taking and rule-following by playing toward the game's stated win condition of covering every picture.

Teaching tips

  • Provide a die, one player piece per player and enough counters to cover the 20 inner spaces.
  • Before playing, name the pictures using J words, such as jug, jet, jam, jar, jacket, jellyfish and jump; model the beginning sound and letter J.
  • Use the printed cover-all goal, or agree on one of the contributor’s optional partner/time-limit goals before starting.

Skills covered

  • Turn-based board gameplay — students roll a die, move around the track, and cover matching pictures until the board is complete.

  • Rule-following toward a stated goal — students play to the explicit win condition of covering every picture on the board.
