The focus is: Syllable Patterns: V/V Syllable Types: Open and Magic e Number of Syllables: 2-3 This set is meant to make students feel successful because: · Syllable patterns are introduced in a specific order to ensure students master a single syllable type with blends and digraphs before moving on to the next type. · As students reach mastery with recognizing and decoding each syllable type, the next will be introduced. Scaffolding: · Multiple visual supports utilized to ensure independence and confidence with the strategy. · As students are able, supports are removed to foster independence. Parts of each activity: · New Words: introduced during this activity. · Review: Familiar syllable types and patterns for practice and maintenance. · Break Before You Read (word list): The step following syllabication is the informal “break.” Students insert a slash to separate syllables This occurs prior to reading. · Break While You Read: To further generalize the “break” strategy to reading. Students read two sentences and “break” words as they come to them. Add additional levels of generalization as students progress: · Ask students to “Break While You Read” with a decodable text, a story excerpt, content vocabulary, or a sentence on a worksheet. · Fade the last support (the steps to divide syllables) by asking students to copy and divide a word on notebook paper or white boards.
