Using an Inside Voice Social Story

Using an Inside Voice Social Story
Special Resources, Life Skills, Social Skills, Special Education Needs (SEN), Not Grade Specific, Activities

Speaking with an appropriate volume and tone is an essential classroom skill. This Using Inside Voice Social Story teaches children when and why to use their "inside" voices in a clear, encouraging way. Social stories are an effective tool for teaching children about various social situations in a manner that is accessible and easily understood. The primary goal is to offer guidance on social skills, cues, expectations, and common responses, especially for those who may find such aspects challenging to navigate. While beneficial for a broad range of children, social stories hold particular significance for those on the autistic spectrum, providing valuable support in understanding and managing social interactions. Using relatable examples and pictures, this social story explains what an inside voice sounds like - quiet, calm and gentle. The story also discusses why lowering volume is important for not disrupting others. This Inside Voice social story fosters self-regulation and cooperation skills. It is ideal for teachers, counselors, therapists and parents working on classroom behaviors with children who have autism, ADHD or other special needs. The concrete explanations and supportive tone help reinforce appropriate vocal volume. Providing this story prior to circle time or transitions helps set students up for success. They will relate to the real-world examples as they learn when and how to use inside voices during the school day! These books should be used over and over to reinforce the point so I would suggest either putting the pages into a display book or laminating and binding them. Solving Equations Introduction Activity

Solving Equations Introduction Activity
Math, Addition and Subtraction, Addition, Grade 2, 3, 4, Activities

This is a Solving Equations Introduction Activity that your elementary students will love. The objective is for students to problem-solve to find the number of balls hidden inside boxes. This is an activity designed for 2nd – 4th grade students. It is a cooperative partner activity. Purpose of the lesson: --For students to try to solve equations (disguised so they don’t “look like” equations) by problem-solving. --For students to develop an intuitive process for solving an equation. --For students to see solving equations in a concrete, visual way (balls and boxes) before moving to the abstract (equations without context). The activity provides a low entry point so all students can engage and increase in rigor as the lesson progresses. As you work through each slide, you will be able to click "show solution" after time is up for students. A printable handout is included, so students can work together to complete their drawings as they work to solve each problem. I hope you enjoy! Heat and Light Investigation

Heat and Light Investigation
Science, Physics, Grade 3, 4, 5, Activities

This is a Heat and Light Investigation. This small unit is a simple investigation into the sun as a heat source, along with a quick look at other sources of heat. Students will explore the vocabulary attached to the topic, how objects differ when in direct sunlight vs. in the shade, how living things are affected by the sun and its light, mechanical and electrical heat sources, and misconceptions about heat sources. At the end of the unit there is a quiz for you to give your students and there are answer keys wherever possible. • Explain to students that they will be working in groups to create a set of four movements they feel illustrate the meaning of one of the vocabulary words they’ve learned. • Separate your students into groups of three or four. • Give each group one of the Vocabulary Movement Cards. • As they are making their movements, they will also be verbally incorporating the vocabulary word and its definition. Example: if their word is ‘machine’, as they are doing their first movement they will say, “machine”. As they do their second movement they might say, “a device made to consume energy.” For the third movement they could say, “to produce another form of energy,” and for the fourth say, “to do some kind of work!” • Encourage students to USE THEIR SPACE: go high, low, and in between! • Give students enough time to come up with the movements as a group, practice the movements, and get ready to teach their movements to the rest of the class.
