Phonics Strategies for 3rd and 4th Graders
ELA, Language Development, Phonics, Grade 3, 4, 5, Activities
Phonics Strategies is a program in which phonics concepts are absorbed more quickly, with less effort, that can be transferred successfully to unknown words in the student's education and recreational reading. The phonics program is designed for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Vocabulary emphasizes two and three-syllable words. Part 1 focuses on Vc, Vcc, and R-controlled vowel phonograms. Phonics Strategies begins with more common prefixes and suffixes to build a solid foundation and progresses towards more difficult/less common Vccc/Vcccc phonograms and 4-letter R-controlled phonograms, along with harder prefixes and suffixes. Part 2 of this series focuses on Vvcc chunks, Vce chunks and diphthong vowels; plus advanced prefixes and suffixes, and adding suffixes to words ending in Silent E. Phonics Strategies includes reading pages, listening and identifying skills, worksheets, hands-on activities, phonics poems, phonics games and even letters to parents for each unit! Additionally, there is a phonics pretest, and three phonics post tests. Answer sheets are included. For teachers who use the pretest and wish to zero in on specific concepts, an index is provided to help you find supporting reading and worksheets. Pronunciation clues and spelling rules with examples are also included in every unit. Implementation of this Phonics Strategies for 3rd & 4th Graders should be a success with the Tips and Suggestions section included. Goals are included on the top of each worksheet. Reviewing the goals can assist the mentor in understanding the purpose of the worksheet. It is also helps the parents to understand the emphasis of each page if worksheets are sent home to reinforce concepts reviewed during a class or tutoring session. There are 15 parts: two narrators, Princess Isabelle, Barcus the dog, Tweeters the bird, two servants, King Isaac V (Isabelle’s father), Queen Iris (Isabelle’s mother), 3 friends, Prince Ivan (Isabelle’s brother), Laugh-A-Lot the court jester, and a wizard named Wizard. Synopsis: Princess Isabelle learns about the true meaning of happiness through the help of her family, the servants and court jester, and her pets and friends. Your students in grades 1-3 will delight in reading Theater – The Unhappy Princess as a Readers’ Theater or performing as a play. Students can share parts if there are more students in your classroom or they can double-up on parts if there are too few students. Students can also play other roles during this activity from helping with learning parts to making scenery and props, arranging the props, etc. The story begins with Princess Isabelle who is very unhappy despite living in an enormous, enchanted castle with her beloved family: King Isaac V, Queen Iris, Prince Ivan, and her pet dog Barcus and bird Tweeters. She had just celebrated her eleventh birthday and invited all of the children in the Kingdom to her party. As the play continues, many people and animals try to cheer her up and make her happy. There are favorite foods, presents, friends who want to play, an invitation to visit the country fair with knights in armor slaying fire-breathing dragons, and jokes and new tricks from the court jester. When nothing seems to work to make the princess happy, Wizard visits and hands the princess a box. What’s inside the box? How does Wizard get the princess to be happy after all? You’ll have to read the play to find out. Theater – The Unhappy Princess includes a Parent/Teacher Guide filled with questions to ask before reading, words to preview, questions after reading, tips on how to perform the play, and a list of extended activities to build understanding and enhance learning. There are also student activities designed to teach the vocabulary introduced in the play and questions for student responses to ensure reading comprehension and foster critical thinking. To further understand the play, a story map activity is designed to help students identify the title, setting, characters, story problem, main events, solution, and theme or lesson. The final creative activity is for students to draw and color a picture of a prince or princess and to write their own story. 12-page resource with Parent/Teacher Guide and Answer Key.

Additionally, when you do a puzzle, you activate both sides of the brain, thus increasing your cognitive function. This in turn will help prevent long-term cognitive decline. B. Improving visual-spatial reasoning: By placing the pieces within a larger image, students develop their spatial reasoning. C. Increased IQ: Researchers have found that solving puzzles or riddles helps raise IQ by up to 4 points. D. Improving problem-solving skills: When solving these puzzles, children take different options or solution approaches, generally carrying out the trial-error process. Thus they learn to formulate theories, test hypotheses and even change perspectives, although they do all this in microseconds. This is one reason we like to incorporate music in our learning environments. We don’t have to limit music to music class only for our students. In my store, you’ll find a wide array of music resources that students will love to learn from. This is a music video for your math students in kindergarten and 1st grade. The title of this song is “Looking for a Ten.” This is a song and video that will have students learn about addition. This video provides explanations and many examples to support student learning. You can implement this video at the introduction of teaching this math skill. The objective is for students to correctly identify parts of an addition problem that make ten. This would be a song that I play multiple times for my students across the course of this unit. It is an MP4 file, so you can download it and have the option of embedding it into any slideshow you may be using for instruction. I hope you enjoy!
