Richard Allen This First Grade Level H book is an interesting read for Black History Month. This month commemorates the achievements and history of African Americans. With this resource, your students can join in the February celebration! The text features Richard Allen, a builder and one of the first black legislators in Texas. Allen was born a slave in Richmond, Virginia in 1830. He was brought to Texas in 1837 and was eventually freed in 1865. He is credited with designing and building the Houston mayor's mansion and became a well-known contractor, bridge builder, and saloon owner. After the Civil War, he was a political leader and served one term in the Texas Legislature. He remained active in politics throughout his life. The book is sold individually as a Top Seller. "The Place for Us" Comprehension Activity

If you are searching for resources to support the reading comprehension of your students, you’ll want something more than just answering multiple choice questions. Questioning is certainly a way to assess comprehension, but there are other components that can be included to assess this skill as well. This is a “The Place for Us” Comprehension Activity. It is for elementary students in 2nd – 4th grade. The objective is for students to demonstrate understanding of a passage by correctly completing given tasks. There are 4 pages included. The breakdown is as follows: Page 1 – A page long reading passage titled “The Place for Us.” You can read this as a whole group, have students read it with a partner or have them read it independently. Encourage students to highlight or circle words or parts of the story that feel important to them. Page 2 – A vocabulary graphic organizer . Students will find the 3 bolded words from the story and use them on this page. For each word, students will write a definition, give an example, illustrate a picture, and use the word in a sentence. Page 3 – Problem and Solution Graphic Organizer . Students will use the graphic organizers to outline details from the story in order to uncover the problem and solution. Page 4 – Asking and Answering Questions. Students will write two questions that they might ask someone to answer about the text under the “question” headings below. A friend will underline the answer in the text in purple and write the answer below. Each of these pages require students to revisit the passage and analyze it from a different perspective, which in turn furthers their comprehension for what they have read. I hope you enjoy! Speaking and Listening Would You Rather Set 3 is the first of 5 sets to engage your students in this game. Speaking and listening are important skills to practice with students. Many students have a hard time sharing their ideas out loud. Would You Rather questions are a great way to get all students involved. You could do just speaking and listening where you put the questions up and students share their answers. You could print out the questions and have students answer in groups. Or, you could have students write answers in complete sentences and then share. Would You Rather questions not only allow students to communicate with each other, it's a great opportunity for students to see who might have common interests. If students complete these in a group setting, there could be some great discussions that students have based on who has the same answers. If you choose to have students stand and give their answer in front of the class, you could have them just say their answer, or you could encourage them to give reasons why. Having them write the sentence first will also help them clearly state their answer.
