Math Journal: Experimental Probability with Two Independent Events This resource serves as a helpful teaching tool for educators focusing on the concepts of experimental probability and theoretical probability of two independent events in middle school mathematics. It offers an engaging math journal entry exercise that allows students to explain their mathematical thinking in pictures, numbers, diagrams, and words. How to Use: Students are given the following question: You have a six-sided die and a penny. If you roll the die twice and flip the penny twice, which is more likely: to get two sixes on the die or two heads from the penny? Explain your thinking using pictures, numbers, and words. Can you figure out the percentage chance of each event happening? Give students dice, coins, and mini whiteboards to work with so they can start to test out their ideas and theories. Encourage students to tackle the penny first as there are fewer results when flipping two coins. Suggest that students work together in pairs or small groups and use a table or chart to record the experimental options that could occur. You may want to start by teaching a mini-lesson about the probability of two independent events: that one multiplies the probability of each event to determine the probability of BOTH events. Grades to Use With This resource is ideal for use with students in grades 5-9 but can also be used as special education material or enrichment content for gifted children aged between grades 4-6. This is an Ocean Animal Report utilizing the TIDE format. Included in this file you will find a parent letter about the project, prompts for each paragraph, TIDE graphic organizers for three paragraphs of informative writing along with writing paper for the first drafts of each, a blank page for them to create a cover for the report, a page for pictures of the ocean animal, final draft paper, an example of completed organizers and a final draft to match, and a couple of rubric options for both writing and/or oral presentation. The three paragraphs will address: • Why students chose the ocean animal they chose • A few basic facts about the ocean animal (e.g., habitat, diet, physical description) • A few cool or unique facts about the ocean animal Generally, this project takes my students about 4-5 days to complete. The oral presentation takes another day or two. I send home the parent letter a week in advance. I’ve done this with both second and third graders and found it to work well for both. Here’s a further breakdown of the paragraphs: Paragraph One Writing Prompt: Write an informative paragraph explaining why you chose the ocean animal you chose for your report. Paragraph Two Writing Prompt: Write an informative paragraph explaining three basic facts about your ocean animal (e.g., diet, habitat, physical characteristics). Paragraph Three Writing Prompt: Write an informative paragraph explaining three unique facts about your ocean animal (e.g., speed, communication, lifestyle). This resource is a thorough and engaging way to build research and writing skills.

If you are teaching your students about the different types of conflict in plays, novels, short stories and movies, check out this visual assignment to add to your teaching toolkit! It includes a handout which reviews the parts of a story (exposition, the rising action, climax, the falling action and the resolution) as well as the protagonist versus the antagonist. Then you can teach your students about four distinct types of conflict in all kinds of literature: 1) Character versus Character: A conflict between the main character and a villain or antagonist. 2) Character versus Society: A conflict between the main character and parts of the specific society they live within. 3) Character versus Nature: A conflict between the main character and nature including hunger, animals, or extreme weather. 4) Character versus Self: A conflict between the main character and their desires, ethics, or thoughts. Next, help your class brainstorm examples of each type of conflict from popular books, movies and plays they know. Students will illustrate each type of conflict on their graphic organizer. This is an easy way to help your pupils find meaning in and recall their learning. The completed illustrations can make a wonderful bulletin board display. An Answer Key is Included! Grades to Use With: This lesson could easily work in grades 5-10 or high school special education classrooms. Even and Odd Numbers: Investigate patterns with the 4 operations

The purpose of these resources is to explore patterns in our number system through one of the most fundamental classification of numbers - even and odd. Recognising even and odd numbers is first seen in Grade 2, and this builds on work covered here. See the resource Recognising even and odd numbers with and without objects. Having accomplished this, a natural extension is to investigate whether there are any patterns when even and odd numbers are added, subtracted, multiplied or divided. So, as well as looking for patterns pupils are practicing and applying the 4 basic number operations in a math investigation There are two fundamental approaches to this investigation: Using visual aids: Students can get visual clues when even and odd numbers of objects are displayed in an orderly fashion, which is always a good starting point. Addition and Subtraction are covered here with worksheets and digital teaching resources. Multiplication has a digital teaching resource. The range of numbers used are between 1 and 28 for addition, and 1 to 14 for division For the multiplication the examples go from 2 x 2 to 6 x 7 No visual aids: students apply the idea learnt in the Grade 2 resource that whatever the size of the number, in the end only the last (unit) digit matters when deciding if a number is even or odd. Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are all covered here. The range of numbers used here are: - Addition: 2-digit plus a 2-digit number up a total of 30, 50 or 100 - Subtraction: Two 2-digit numbers with the first number a maximum of 30, 50 or 100 - Multiplication: From 2 x 2 to 12 x 12 - Division: Dividend a maximum of 100, Divisor up to 12. The work is broken down into modules so that a step by step approach can be taken. This prepares your students to: - Independently investigate and recognise any patterns or consistently repeated results when performing the 4 operations with even and odd numbers. - Make generalizations from the work carried out. - Make predictions and test them. How many worksheets are in each set ? Lots and lots and virtually unlimited on some of them. At the click of a button all numbers are randomised, so the questions change every time which allows you to create new worksheets for extra practice or revision throughout the year or even give groups of pupils in your class different sets of questions. Answers can be found on the second page of every worksheet, automatically generated when you create a new worksheet. Interactive Teaching Resources These are designed for whole class teaching with an Interactive Whiteboard or on a computer for one to one tuition with instant feedback to help introduce the content of the worksheets. As with the worksheets numbers can be randomized giving you almost unlimited examples to work with. Common Core State Standards CCSS3.OA.D.9 Identify arithmetic patterns (including patterns in the addition table or multiplication table), and explain them using properties of operations. For example, observe that 4 times a number is always even, and explain why 4 times a number can be decomposed into two equal addends. Recycling Workshop Home-School Connection

Have you been learning about the 3 Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle? Now that your 2nd, 3rd, or 4th grade students know what it means to recycle, it's time to put that concept into action. Students will find an object at home that would otherwise be trash and recycle it into something wonderful! Once they've completed their projects at home, they will bring them to school and get going on the second part of the workshop, which is a how-to writing outlining the steps they took to recycle their objects. Students will introduce their projects, discuss transition words, draw pictures of each step, and write a final draft. As a conclusion to the workshop, students will show their completed objects to the class and share their completed how-to writings with their classmates. The ultimate objectives are to put recycling into action, write a clear how-to essay so others can do the same at home, and share those essays with others. It's been a crowd favorite for three years running! In this product you will find a letter to send home to parents and students outlining the at-home expectations for the project, an outline for a rough draft of the how-to writing with a section dedicated to possible transition words for each step of their project, and a page for students to write a final draft. There's even a spot for pictures of the students with their projects! Finally, a rubric for assessment has been included and covers both the written and oral parts of the workshop.
