Zombie Government Teacher Simulation Guide Thanks for your support in getting this product! I worked hard to make it a flexible and fun adaptation of the activity I made for my classroom. Don’t hesitate to adapt the activity to best mesh with your classroom. The purpose of this activity is to demonstrate to students how difficult group decision making is, how tricky insurgent groups can be, and how community needs like food, water, education, and entertainment can quickly be neglected when safety concerns are major factors. Each day students will be in their small groups making decisions about their government. You, as the facilitator, act as a kind of game manager. Some groups will find making decisions very easy, others will struggle with basics such as who is in charge? As a general rule of thumb, I make announcements mid-class every day, like a newspaper of the simulation. I can use this opportunity to individualize the conditions within the various groups, or to make things harder on groups that are finding the task easy. See the following page for ideas I’ve used in the past. Here are some general ideas on “events” that could spring up in each QZ: -- Imposter! One of the group members is known to be working with the Fireflies, but it is unclear who (approach a student before class to let them know) -- Food crisis! Rations are short, and it is unclear how to feed the population -- Road blocks! The Fireflies have blocked roads in order to combat the curfew. Now trucks, tanks, and vehicles cannot move throughout the city -- Tainted water! The diseased fungus has entered the water supply! How will the group let their residents know, and provide a solution? -- Assassination! The group leader has been taken out by the Fireflies. How will the group respond? -- An Olive Branch! The Fireflies have proposed a peace treaty, so long as they can have an equal say in all government decisions. If the group has a leader, they will now have 1 Government leader, and 1 Firefly leader. If they have a 5 person council, they will now have a 10 person council (half Fireflies), etc. -- And anything else you can think of! The more creativity the more the game sticks with students. I sincerely hope the simulation is as fun for your students as it typically is for mine. Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers Dice Game

This is a fun and easy game to add to your fractions unit to help students practice working with mixed numbers and improper fractions. Students must demonstrate knowledge of what makes an improper fraction, how to convert an improper fraction into a mixed number, and how to order and compare mixed numbers. I suggest using 10-sided dice (if possible) for a wider variety of outcomes. I encourage my students to use mini-whiteboards for recording their work and doing their calculations. Student Instructions: 1) You and your partner each roll the die two times so you each have two numbers. 2) Use your two numbers to make an IMPROPER FRACTION (which one should be the numerator?). 3) Write down your improper fraction and convert it to a mixed number. 4) Compare with your partner’s mixed number. Which number is bigger? You might have to find a common denominator if the whole numbers are the same. 5) The person with the larger number gets a point. Play until one person has five points. Grades to Use With: This is a simple game that can be an addition to a lesson or fraction review in grades 3-7 when students are working with fractions that have a value greater than one. Standards: CCSS3NF.A.3 Compare fractions by creating equivalent fractions CCSS4NF.A.2 Compare fractions by creating equivalent fractions- finding common denominators CCSS4NF.B.4a Fractions greater than 1 and multiplying fractions What's Included: A simple 2 Page PDF. OP Words Matching Mats

Students can practice reading comprehension skills with these OP word family mats. Students can practice reading OP words in isolation and in the context of sentences. The words in this set follow a CVC or CCVC spelling pattern. Included in this resource: This resource includes one word mat and one sentence mat, both for reading OP words in insolation and in context. There are also picture cards that correspond with each word and sentence. To complete this activity, students will read each OP word or sentence on the mat and then match the corresponding pictures. Students can work independently or with a partner to complete this activity. How to Use these OP word Family Mats: The students can simply lay the images on top of the word or sentence. They can be placed in a file folder utilizing hook and loop fasteners to attach the images. A magnetic activity can be created by using a baking sheet and magnets to affix the images. Students will love the hands-on nature of this activity. The bold and colorful images will capture students' attention, and the easy to recognize pictures are sure to keep students engaged in learning. These literacy activities allow students to practice target words both in the context of sentences and in isolation. Where can these mats be used? Literacy Center - Students can work independently or with a partner to read these words Morning Tub or Basket - The cards can be placed in a morning bin for students to work on as students arrive to class. Small Group Activity - The teacher can choose a small group of students or a specific group of words for students to work on in a small group setting with the teacher. Hands On Assessment - The teacher can use these to test students on reading the target words in context or in isolation. The mats simply need to be printed out, while the matching cards need to be printed and cut. Lamination is optional for increased durability. Animal Project: Creative Creatures - Biomes, Structural, and Behavioral Adaptations

Here's a middle grades science project (for grades 4-7) that will let your students use their creativity to apply their knowledge of biomes and adaptations as they complete research, integrate knowledge from several sources, type a report, and make a detailed diagram ! How to Use: Assign each student an animal or let them chose their own. They need to research that animal’s biome and the adaptations the animal currently has. Next, each student chooses a different biome and moves their animal there. They must use their imagination and logic to predict the adaptations the animal would develop in the new biome. Once each student has completed their notes, they can type or write a report to present the information. I encouraged my students to make a four-paragraph report: Paragraph one: describe initial biome Paragraph two: describe initial adaptations Paragraph three: describe new biome Paragraph four: describe new adaptations Students also create their own visual image of their creative creature (labels encouraged). I like to put all the reports and images together into a class book. This is fun way to showcase the students’ hard work. I have included the title page I use for our class book. I have also included the rubric I use to assess the projects. Graces to Use With: This product is appropriate for students in grades 4-7 depending on when your science curriculum includes biomes, structural/physical and behavioural adaptations, or diversity of life standards. In this SEL product, you will get SEL Flashcards for Social Emotional Learning. You will also get SEL coloring pages because there are two different pages of emotions/feelings. Both pages have a black and white version and a color version. The black and white version allows your students to color their own faces and images. The emotions listed are; happy, sad, silly, proud, shy confused, scared, excited, angry, tired, loving, sick, disgusted, cry, jealous, disappointed. These flashcards can be used for so many purposes. I have used these flashcards for Go Fish games where the students have to ask for a certain feeling. You will need to make two copies of the colored emotions poster to make this game work. If a student asks for "angry" and the student they asked has it, that student give the card to the one who asked and that student places the match down on the table and names a time they felt angry. I have also used this resource for memory games. You would, again, make two copies of each emotion. Then you would mix up the cards and place them face down (I would highly recommend cardstock) in a random order. Students then would choose two cards and reveal the emotion cards. If they are a match, then the student can share when they have felt that way. If it is not a match, they would place the cards face down again the the next student would take a turn. This is a fun and interactive game but also helps students discuss their feelings in a non-threatening way. This resource can be used as a whole class activity where students color their flashcards and then cut them out. They can randomly pick a card and name a time they felt that way. This can also be used as a center activity for Go Fish or Memory (as I described above). The ways to use these Emotion SEL Flashcards are endless!
