Math Journal: Experimental Probability with Two Independent Events This resource serves as a helpful teaching tool for educators focusing on the concepts of experimental probability and theoretical probability of two independent events in middle school mathematics. It offers an engaging math journal entry exercise that allows students to explain their mathematical thinking in pictures, numbers, diagrams, and words. How to Use: Students are given the following question: You have a six-sided die and a penny. If you roll the die twice and flip the penny twice, which is more likely: to get two sixes on the die or two heads from the penny? Explain your thinking using pictures, numbers, and words. Can you figure out the percentage chance of each event happening? Give students dice, coins, and mini whiteboards to work with so they can start to test out their ideas and theories. Encourage students to tackle the penny first as there are fewer results when flipping two coins. Suggest that students work together in pairs or small groups and use a table or chart to record the experimental options that could occur. You may want to start by teaching a mini-lesson about the probability of two independent events: that one multiplies the probability of each event to determine the probability of BOTH events. Grades to Use With This resource is ideal for use with students in grades 5-9 but can also be used as special education material or enrichment content for gifted children aged between grades 4-6. skip counting by 10s bingo - boards 6-10

Need a fun, engaging activity for practicing skip counting by 10 with your kiddos? This math bingo game is perfect for getting your students focused on skip counting in 10s! Preparation: Print and laminate enough Bingo Boards for each student to have one Optional: print, cut and laminate the Playing Squares Print, cut and laminate the Calling Cards. Lamination is optional, but recommended, as it will ensure that the game remains in good condition and can be used for many years to come! To avoid excessive printing and laminating, the Playing Squares could be replaced with other manipulatives such as buttons or counters. Alternatively, students could mark squares off on their Bingo Boards with dry erase markers and then simply clean the boards again after playing (provided that you have laminated the boards) How to Play: Each student needs a Bingo Board and at least 7 Playing Squares (or other manipulatives or a dry erase marker) Shuffle the Calling Cards and place them in a pile. Draw a Calling Card and call out and/or display the contents of the card. Each student looks on their Bingo Board for a block that matches the Calling Card. If they find one, they cover that block with a Playing Square. Draw a new Calling Card and repeat the process. The game continues until somebody wins. To win, a student must shout out “BINGO!” when they have covered three blocks in a row (horizontally, vertically or diagonally). If the Calling Cards run out before anybody wins, simply shuffle them again and continue playing. Please note: Sometimes there may be more than one block on the Bingo Board that matches the Calling Card. The student may only cover one block on a turn. Once that turn is over, the Playing Square may not be moved to cover a different block. This resource includes 5 different bingo board, in colour as well as black and white. In this resource, you will get 24 different stempathy scenarios. Stempathy is STEM plus Empathy combined. For this activity, you will need Legos or the generic brand (which is cheaper). I purchased 2000 for 24-25 students to get their own bag or box of bricks. Each scenario includes a child relatable problem plus discussion questions about how someone is feeling and why solving the problem is important. Since there are 24 scenarios, you can give everyone in your class one of them and give them their own set of Lego bricks or generic bricks. This resource can also be used for centers, group work, or partner tasks. Each student also can have a worksheet (included) which prompts them to answer the discussion questions and draft a design of their solution. Students can combine creativity and empathy in this resource. Some of the scenarios are; a person is in a wheelchair and there are stairs during a fire drill, a dog is not longer able to jump up into the car, a person gets too distracted in class and needs a quieter space, the local food bank is short on veggies and fruits and needs a structure to growth fresh produce, a person is often disorganized and loses their supplies and homework and needs an organizing system, students need a structure to protect them from the hot sun and wet rain, and many more. If you teach STEM or SEL classes, this is a great way to have a multidisciplinary lesson that is hands on, engaging, and fun for kids. There is no right or wrong answer and students can really put themselves in others' shoes in this resource. I am a school counselor and work with students who are in kindergarten through 8th grade.
