Transformations Activity : Rotations, Reflections & Slides in 4 Quadrants This engaging teaching resource is specially designed for middle school educators, particularly those teaching students in grades 6 to 9 about transformations and 4 quadrant Cartesian planes. How to Use: This package includes 4 different worksheets. On each one, a shape starts out in one place on the Cartesian plane and ends up in another place. Students are tasked with explaining how that shape could have moved from the starting position to the final position using at least two different transformations. For example, they may describe a translation and then a reflection. Or they may describe a rotation and then a translation. They are multiple ways to move the shapes from start to finish. Students are encouraged to use as much precise mathematical language as possible including naming lines of reflection and centers or rotation (using coordinates), describing the amount and direction of a rotation, and describing the size and direction of translations. I would do one of the 4 activities as a whole class. Then, allow students to work in pairs or small groups to complete another. Next, assign one for homework. Finally, keep one for a quick in-class quiz/assessment. A sample answer key is included, but each question has multiple ways to be solved. Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed for students in grades 5-8 who are learning about topics including transformations and integers. Math, Algebra, Grade 8, Activities
This resource was developed to meet the requirements of the 8th Grade Expressions & Equations Standards below: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.EE .B.5 Graph proportional relationships, interpreting the unit rate as the slope of the graph. Compare two different proportional relationships represented in different ways. For example, compare a distance-time graph to a distance-time equation to determine which of two moving objects has greater speed. Pre-Requisites: Students should already have a general understanding of how to write an equation from a verbal description, how to test for proportionality between any two ratios, and how to graph coordinates. PLEASE NOTE: This lesson was made to build off of the extensive work done in 7th grade on proportional relationships and would not be thorough enough for a classroom that is taking the 7th grade state test .

Healthy eating and budgeting are key life skills that need to be taught to our middle school students in grades 5-8. Here's a fun, interactive lesson that can do just that! Students are tasked with creating a personalized meal plan using a $30 budget for the day. They are given 20 food options for each of three meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) with the prices provided (based on a Canadian discount food store). They plan which items they will buy for each meal while following some healthy and budget-friendly rules: each meal must include a vegetable or fruit each meal must make some leftovers to be eaten another day all three meals must not exceed the $30 budget Students can approach this task in different ways. They might decide to use $10 for each meal, or plan two cheaper meals to be able to have one that is more expensive. They might have to change their plan as they go, put back a sweet treat they don't really need, or switch to a cheaper option to stay in budget. These are all helpful, real-life math and life skills! What's Included: Teacher Handout with instructions on how to use the lesson. Student Handout to brainstorm ideas for healthy shopping and staying on budget. 3 Pages of Worksheets: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner: Each with 20 food options, a shopping list, place to add up the total cost of the meal, and some reflection questions. Final Budget Page: Students add up the cost of all three meals and write a paragraph to reflect on the shopping for healthy choices on a budget process. Grades to Use With: This lesson is perfect for students in grades 5-8 who are learning decimal operations and starting to learn about life skills. It could also be used in a high school special education classroom if the students are able to complete decimal operations (calculators can be used).
