Stop, Think, Choose – Self-Control SEL Game

In this resource, you will get a fun SEL game for students. This STOP THINK CHOOSE game is to help students practice slowing down when they are upset and thinking through their feelings and choices. There is a stop sign handout that all students receive and can take home. This can also be used as an SEL poster in the classroom to reference this strategy of Stopping (calming down and stopping what you are doing), Thinking (How do I and other feel right now?) and Choosing a safe and respectful choice. When students play the game, they will land on ice cream truck, car and stop spaces. The ice cream truck is for fun. The students will read the joke or "would you rather" question to the group and they will guess the answer or share their preferred choice of a "would you rather" question. The car spaces are for scenarios where students can walk it through the stop, think, and choose strategy. The stop sign spaces for for students to act out a motion, saying, or movement around the room activity and the person on their right will tell them to stop. Students will practice stopping right away. This is great practice for when teachers ask students to stop and they need to learn to stop right away in the moment. Lastly there is an extension handout for students to fill out that assesses if they understand the strategy. There are 24 car scenario cards and 24 ice cream truck cards for fun. There is an action needed for each space of the game. The game board is 8.5 by 11 inches but if you would like to enlarge the game board, this is possible using a copy machine and zooming to a larger size if needed. You just need game pieces and dice or an 8 sided die. Phonics Chart: Alphabet chart A Bright, colourful, phonetically correct alphabet chart ! A colourful A4-size alphabet picture chart to help children learn to recognise the upper and lower case letters of the alphabet. Each letter has a picture of an object that begins with that sound. 2 font styles are included. When children are first starting to learn letter shapes and sounds, it is helpful to have a handy reference chart that the children can use to aid recall or letter shapes and a picture cue to the sound each letter stands for. There are many ways to use these charts: Wall reference Desk reference - give one to each child; special needs children especially find them helpful. Wall reference: a wall chart Play quick games: Put a counter on the letter that says /t/, for example, and play until all letters are covered. Cut up the squares and ask the children to lay the letters in alphabetical order. Activities: Write me the sound that ...teddy... begins with: can the child write the letter straight away without looking? Does the child look for the picture of the teddy? Use to assess. Can you tell me which object begins with the sound ...../h/, for example. The child looks for 'h' and says 'house'. Let the children use their charts as they complete worksheets/write/spell. Pinecone Counting Freebie This is a Pinecone Counting Activity that is perfect for your elementary math students. Preschool – 1st grade students can effectively utilize this activity . The objective of this activity is to correctly form numbers and work out sums. What You Get: A 1-page printable PDF that consists of the numbers 1-10 printed on pinecones with a blank log slice. How to Use the Pinecone Counting Freebie: You can do a number of fun activities with this Pinecone Counting Freebie, but first you need to prepare it! You will print this page and laminate it. After it is laminated, you’ll need to cut out all 10 cones and the wooden log slice. Some activity suggestions include: 1. Students will select a pinecone to place on the log slice. Students will identify that number and use a dry erase marker to practice writing the number correctly. 2. Students will select a pinecone. On the log slice, they will use a dry erase marker and draw objects to represent the number they chose. 3. Students will select two pinecones. They will add these numbers together and write their sum on the log slice. This can easily be made into a fun partner game or small group center with the teacher. The teacher (or the partner) can select the two pinecones, then show them to everyone in the group. Each person in the group will need to write down what they believe is the sum on their own log slice. Here is a handy Doubling Rule A4-size poster. Do you need a simple way to help pupils know when to double and when not? Either give each table a poster to keep handy while the pupils write, or pin it at strategic points around the classroom for easy reference. Doubling can be made complicated, with more rules added, all of which add extra steps for a child to remember. This makes spelling a nightmare for a child with a processing difficulty. Here at Lilibette's Resources, I like to make reading and spelling as easy as possible, with as few rules as possible, helping the children to internalise the rules without the need to learn them parrot fashion. Here is the doubling rule simply explained with worked examples. The key rule is: We double to keep the vowel short. Many parents struggle with this rule, too! So why not send the poster home with your pupils? Teachers often teach parents unaware!!
