This 55-page comprehensive, interdisciplinary curriculum will allow you to turn your classroom into an environmental action lab focused on ocean plastic pollution. Designed to bridge cutting-edge marine science with civic advocacy, it provides students with opportunities to move beyond passive learning and into actual environmental action based on evidence. The curriculum consists of three phases that take students through a complete educational process. In Phase 1, Theoretical Framework gives students all of the background knowledge necessary for them as citizens to become advocates for change through evidence-based advocacy strategies (i.e., the Coriolis Effect; chemical properties of polymers; biodegradability; accumulation and magnification of toxins in food webs; marine ecosystems) designed using science and basic tenets of physics & chemistry that are used in designing marine policies. In Phase 2, Application Phase, students have the opportunity to apply what they have learned through 10 worksheets that require analytical thinking skills (i.e., interpreting data sets; calculating numbers; ecological reasoning; evaluating corporations' environmental claims) in the creation of project proposals, respectively, regarding greenwashing, greenhouse gas emission reductions. In Phase 3, Instructional Materials, teacher support is provided (i.e., graphic organizers; rubric; answer keys with rational explanations; pacing guide; differentiation strategies, etc.) for successful implementation of the curriculum across disciplines. Students will have the opportunity to analyze real-world examples of ocean plastic pollution facts, including: the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, Henderson Island, Midway Atoll; develop a quantitative analysis of the rate of time it takes for PVC plastic to decompose; create maps showing the locations of the locations of plastic and non-plastic debris along ocean currents; analyze data related to the successful clean up of beaches and oceans and use such information in forming international legislation that seeks to eliminate as much plastic pollution as possible through public awareness campaigns such as "I Love My Ocean" public service announcements etc. Students compose policy memos formally addressed to elected representatives. Math Mini Unit: Converting Scores into Percentages This ready-to-print booklet is a real world math tool for teachers of grades 5-8. The activities inside let students practice and apply their knowledge of percentages, decimals, and fractions practically: to convert their test and assignment scores to a common denominator of 100 so that they can easily compare their learning and growth across several tasks. I find that my students love learning this skill: it makes them feel mature and gives them ownership over their learning. How to Use: This 8-page booklet guides students to calculate their scores as percentages, offering them an interesting hands-on experience in crunching numbers. The mini-unit features various problem-solving methods supported by detailed visuals, explanatory notes, practice questions, and partner-focused activities. The content ranges from dealing with equivalent fractions with easily convertible denominators (10, 20, 25) to complex conversions involving more than one-step. Dividing the numerator by the denominator is also explored as a strategy to use with ANY test score. I go through the pages of the booklet with my students over several classes. We complete some practice problems together as a class, I allow some partner or small group work, and I also assign some questions for students to complete independently. Grades to Use With: This math mini-unit is particularly designed for middle school grades (5-8) or high school special education classes who are learning about the relationship between fractions, decimals, and percentages and real world applications of these skills. Tasks include: - Writing a survey question: Your students learn to write a question that has exactly six possible answers. - Collecting data: Your students can ask the members of your class their question. They collect data using a tally chart. They need to ask exactly 25 people. - Recording results as a fraction: Once they have their data, they can turn each answer into a fraction with a denominator of 25. - Calculating an equivalent fraction: Then, they calculate an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 100. - Working with percent (written as a decimal): Finally, they turn that fraction into a percent in decimal form. They use this percent to multiply by 360 degrees in a circle (they can use a calculator for this part) to find out how many degrees each answer gets. - Drawing angles with a protractor: They carefully draw the six angles in their pie chart, one by one. - Labeling a graph: They label the graph to make it clear for others to read. Grades to Use WIth: This math project works well in the middle grades (4-8) when students know how to use protractors, calculate with fractions and decimals, and make graphs.
