As a bonus, as I know that some children are transport lovers, I have included two pictures for some letters to provide a form of transport to appeal to these children (i.e.: H for helicopter, R for rocket, L for lorry, F for fire and fire engine, A for ambulance). This set of alphabet flashcards is equally suited to a variety of needs: · The parent with a young child · The teacher in the classroom · The classroom assistant · The SEN teacher · The ESL/EFL teacher They can be used in all situations to help children learn those all-important alphabet/beginning/initial sounds and become familiar with both upper- and lower-case letter shapes. Suggested ways in which to use the Alphabet Flashcards: · Pin them on the wall in order as a display: ask the child to point to the letters either by name, by sound, or by picture (beginning sound). · Look around the house/classroom for things that begin with the same sound as the object on a given flashcard. · Choose several cards (suitable for the needs of the child you are playing with) and lay them out on the table face up: Play I spy: I spy with my little eye something beginning with ‘….’. · Bean bag toss: Lay a selection of flashcards on the floor and give the child a bean bag. The overall goal is to use the level/color to pick books for several smaller groups. To qualify for a certain level, a student is expected to read a book from that level with about 90–94% accuracy. If a student is consistently accurate and understands, move up a level. If the student is struggling at that level, drop down and add more support. Each student will improve at completely different rates, but it is generally one of the best ways to check progress across the class. DOWNLOAD THE CATALOG TO VIEW ALL GUIDED READING BOOKS AVAILABLE (SORTED LEVELS A-Z) Pre-Reading Question (x1) Teacher asks the prompt aloud, can be while showing the cover or first page. Students share what they already know, or make educated guesses from the cover. Prompt them to use the target vocabulary. Write some of their responses on the board to look back at during the reading. Vocabulary Words (x5) Introduce the five words, best doing it one at a time. Start by saying it, while students repeat and then see if anyone knows what it means before reading further. Read through the meaning and try to briefly connect each word to a picture or gesture so it’s meaningful. Ask students to flip through the book pages and point to where they see each of the vocabulary words. While reading the book pause upon coming across one of the vocab words or read the sentence twice to make sure students understand the word has appeared. Optional: Ask students to raise hands whenever they see/hear one of the new words. Guided Reading Pages (x10) Check the book snapshot (below) for: primary topic - do you need to prep extra reading or intro materials on this? what is taught best - decide on 1-2 bullets to focus on, use the prompt or words provided here for best results. learning goals - what you are checking for students to be able to do after the session, elicit answers using prompts or words provided. key vocabulary (see section above). questions overview - so you know what is coming up and if you need to prep extra materials to assist understanding. Run the lesson You may have already looked at a few of the pages together, but you can show them some of the pictures again first to set meaning. Depending on how much time you have and how familiar your students are with guided reading class, you may want to read the book aloud first with the group first. Students whisper or partner read, while you listen in. If time, do it as a group, one student reading a page each. Use the guided page’s prompts to coach: “Check the picture / does it make sense?” “Point under the words / try the first sound” “Reread the sentence smoothly”. Try to focus more on one student per session (rotating every time), so you can work out if they are ready to move up or need to move down a level. Comprehension Questions (back cover x3) This is your way to check that students didn’t just say the words, but actually understood the text. First, let students answer by pointing to the page/picture and saying a short sentence. After any answer, follow with: “Show me where you found that in the text.” In bigger groups, have partners answer first (10–20 seconds), then call on 2–3 students to share. Differentiation tips: Emerging speakers/struggling readers: oral + pointing On-level: oral in a full sentence Higher: one written sentence or draw + label Book Snapshot Title: Amazing Inventions Genre: Nonfiction (informational text) Subject: Science/Technology + Reading (Informational Text) Primary Topic: Inventions and how they help people Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): G What This Book Teaches Best Introduces common inventions (wheel, lightbulb, telephone, computer, camera, airplane, refrigerator, clock, robot) and what each one does. Explains how inventions help people in everyday life (moving heavy things, seeing in the dark, connecting over distances, doing work quickly, keeping food cold, telling time, doing chores). Builds understanding of technology as something that changes, with “new things… invented every day to help people.” Supports describing key details from short informational passages paired with clear photos. Learning Goals Identify several inventions named in the book and tell what each helps people do. Describe how a wheel helps move heavy things from place to place. Explain how a lightbulb helps people see when it is dark outside. Tell how a telephone connects people who are far apart. Describe one way computers help people work quickly and what they can do. Explain what the book says about technology changing and new inventions helping people. Key Vocabulary From the Text invention — something made for the first time to help people. electricity — power that runs lights and machines. distances — how far apart places are. refrigerator — a machine that keeps food cold. sensors — parts that help a machine notice what is around it. These cards allow students to get ample practice counting to 10 with the colorful and fun images centered around zebras. Students will want to complete these cards again and again. What is Included: There is one zebra themed card for each number 1 through 10. Each clip card includes colorful and bright images to keep students engaged in counting. How to Use: Students will take a card. They will look at the zebra themed number and then use playdough (or other small black manipulatives) to create the correct number of spots to place on the card. When to Use: Math Center - These cards can be used in a math center by simply placing the cards and playdough inside each center . Students can work independently or with a partner to complete these cards. Morning Activity - These cards can be placed inside a morning tub or basket for students to work on as classmates arrive to class. Quiet Activity - These cards make a great quiet time activity for students who do not nap. Small Group Activity - Teachers can pull aside small groups of students to practice working on counting. These playdough cards are a low prep activity for teachers to prepare for students. They just need to be printed and cut apart before students can use them. These cards can be stored inside a task box which allows for easy set up, clean up, and storage. Help your primary students practice counting and skip counting as they develop their number sense and numerical fluency. These fun printables offer excellent fine motor practice for junior students. They could also be implemented as a precursor to multiplication and times table learning. They help students see patterns and relationships when skip counting. How to Use: Provide your students with dot markers (bingo markers). The student begins at zero and places dots in each circle as they count or skip count aloud. Extensions: Encourage your students to look for any numerical patterns: For example, "What is the first number on each worksheet?" "What do you observe about the last number? How is it related to the first number?" "Are there patterns when you look at odd and even numbers?" "What do you see in the ones spot when you count by 5s?"
