Breaking the Big Words Activity Book | Volume 1, Set 5

Breaking the Big Words Activity Book | Volume 1, Set 5
ELA, Language Development, Phonics, Preschool, Grade 1, 2, Workbooks, Worksheets & Printables

A big focus for lower elementary students is learning how to read. This is a multi-faceted skill that comes with many layers for the teacher and the students to unfold. Part of the foundation includes syllable division. When students can identify syllable patterns and break words apart, they become masterful decoders. A child who can successfully decode words is ready to read! Here is a resource that gives complete focus to mastering this skill. Breaking the Big Words Activity Book is a syllable division activity series for students. This is Volume 1, Set 5. The focus is: Syllable Patterns: VC/CV Syllable Types: Bossy R /er/ Number of Syllables: 2-3 This set is meant to make students feel successful because: · Syllable patterns are introduced in a specific order to ensure students master a single syllable type with blends and digraphs before moving on to the next type. · As students reach mastery with recognizing and decoding each syllable type, the next will be introduced. Scaffolding: · Multiple visual supports utilized to ensure independence and confidence with the strategy. · As students are able, supports are removed to foster independence. Parts of each activity: · New Words: introduced during this activity. · Review: Familiar syllable types and patterns to practice. · Break Before You Read (word list): The step following syllabication is the informal “break.” Students insert a slash to separate syllables This occurs prior to reading. · Break While You Read: To further generalize the “break” strategy to reading. Students read two sentences and “break” words as they come to them. Add additional levels of generalization as students progress Ask students to “Break While You Read” a decodable text. Fade the last support, the steps to divide syllables, by asking students to copy and divide a word on notebook paper or white boards. I hope you enjoy! I can be contacted for questions and concerns at jmorgantchr@gmail.com .

Things I Can't Control Worksheet

Things I Can't Control Worksheet
Special Resources, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Special Education Needs (SEN), Not Grade Specific, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets

Worksheet in which children can think about the elements in their life that they have control over and those which they do not. Helping children distinguish between things they can control and things they cannot control can be helpful in several ways. It can help them develop a sense of agency and responsibility for their actions and choices, and reduce feelings of helplessness or anxiety about situations that are beyond their control. It can also help them prioritise their efforts and focus on what they can do to make positive changes in their lives, rather than getting bogged down by things they cannot change. Additionally, distinguishing between things they can control and things they cannot control can be a helpful way for children to deal with their anger. It can help children feel better about their anger and can also help them to figure out how to deal with it in a healthy way. This worksheet is linked with ideas from cognitive behavioral therapy.
