Fresh Water: Guided Reading Level G with Lesson Plan
ELA, Resources for Teachers, Reading Comprehension, Reading, Science, Language Development, Life Sciences, Geography, Social Studies, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Kindergarten, Grade 1, 2, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets, Teacher Tools, Centers, Activities, Literacy Readers, Quizzes, Quizzes and Tests, Assessments, Lesson Plans
This Fresh Water (level g) guided reading book with lesson plan includes: Guided Reading Color Label (front cover x1) This is a quick way to match the book’s demands to what students can generally handle.. The overall goal is to use the level/color to pick books for several smaller groups. To qualify for a certain level, a student is expected to read a book from that level with about 90–94% accuracy. If a student is consistently accurate and understands, move up a level. If the student is struggling at that level, drop down and add more support. Each student will improve at completely different rates, but it is generally one of the best ways to check progress across the class. DOWNLOAD THE CATALOG TO VIEW ALL GUIDED READING BOOKS AVAILABLE (SORTED LEVELS A-Z) Pre-Reading Question (x1) Teacher asks the prompt aloud, can be while showing the cover or first page. Students share what they already know, or make educated guesses from the cover. Prompt them to use the target vocabulary. Write some of their responses on the board to look back at during the reading. Vocabulary Words (x5) Introduce the five words, best doing it one at a time. Start by saying it, while students repeat and then see if anyone knows what it means before reading further. Read through the meaning and try to briefly connect each word to a picture or gesture so it’s meaningful. Ask students to flip through the book pages and point to where they see each of the vocabulary words. While reading the book pause upon coming across one of the vocab words or read the sentence twice to make sure students understand the word has appeared. Optional: Ask students to raise hands whenever they see/hear one of the new words. Guided Reading Pages (x10) Check the book snapshot (below) for: primary topic - do you need to prep extra reading or intro materials on this? what is taught best - decide on 1-2 bullets to focus on, use the prompt or words provided here for best results. learning goals - what you are checking for students to be able to do after the session, elicit answers using prompts or words provided. key vocabulary (see section above). questions overview - so you know what is coming up and if you need to prep extra materials to assist understanding. Run the lesson You may have already looked at a few of the pages together, but you can show them some of the pictures again first to set meaning. Depending on how much time you have and how familiar your students are with guided reading class, you may want to read the book aloud first with the group first. Students whisper or partner read, while you listen in. If time, do it as a group, one student reading a page each. Use the guided page’s prompts to coach: “Check the picture / does it make sense?” “Point under the words / try the first sound” “Reread the sentence smoothly”. Try to focus more on one student per session (rotating every time), so you can work out if they are ready to move up or need to move down a level. Comprehension Questions (back cover x3) This is your way to check that students didn’t just say the words, but actually understood the text. First, let students answer by pointing to the page/picture and saying a short sentence. After any answer, follow with: “Show me where you found that in the text.” In bigger groups, have partners answer first (10–20 seconds), then call on 2–3 students to share. Differentiation tips: Emerging speakers/struggling readers: oral + pointing On-level: oral in a full sentence Higher: one written sentence or draw + label Book Snapshot Title: Fresh Water Genre: Nonfiction Subject: Life Science (Earth science—water) Primary Topic: Fresh water sources, places, and why it matters Estimated Guided Reading Level (A–Z): G What This Book Teaches Best How fresh water differs from salty water (fresh water is not salty). Where fresh water comes from (rain from clouds; snow melting on mountains). Places fresh water is found (rivers, a stream, a pond, deep lakes). How water can move fast or stay still depending on where it is (rivers vs. pond). Why fresh water is important for living things , including plants taking in water through roots. Learning Goals Students can explain that most water on Earth is salty and fresh water is not salty. Students can describe two ways fresh water forms (rain from clouds; snow melting on mountains). Students can name places the book shows fresh water (rivers, stream, pond, lakes). Students can compare how water moves in different places (rivers move fast; pond water stays still). Students can tell why fresh water matters to living things, including plants and trees. Key Vocabulary From the Text salty — tasting like salt. rivers — long, moving water that flows across land. stream — a small river. pond — water that stays in one place. roots — parts under the ground that take in water. Discussion Prompts Pre-reading question: Where do you think fresh water comes from, and where might we find it? Comprehension questions: What does the book say fresh water is not ? Comprehension questions: What are two places the book shows fresh water can be found? Comprehension questions: Why is fresh water important for living things in the book? Printing Tips 1. Best Printing Method (Recommended) “Booklet” Printing (Best if Available) If your printer or PDF viewer supports Booklet Printing , use this. Settings to use: Print mode: Booklet Paper size: Letter or A4 (either works) Orientation: Landscape Print on both sides: Yes Flip on: Short edge Scaling: Fit to printable area Booklet subset: First test: Front sides only Then: Back sides only This will automatically: Pair pages correctly Put the cover on the outside Align everything for folding After printing, fold in half and staple along the spine . 2. If “Booklet” Printing Is NOT Available You can still print this correctly with manual duplex printing . Step-by-step: Open the PDF. Choose Print . Set: Orientation: Landscape Pages per sheet: 1 Print on both sides: Yes Flip on: Short edge Print all pages . Because each PDF page already contains two facing book pages, the result will still fold cleanly into a book. Thousands of Cored Education products are included with your TeachSimple membership. HITCH by Jeanette Ingold, Socratic Seminar Questions
Social Studies, ELA, History, History: USA, Reading, Grade 8, Worksheets & Printables, Novel Studies
HITCH by Jeanette Ingold is a story which describes what life was like working in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the Great Depression of the 1930’s. Set mostly in Montana, the story is told through the eyes of Moss Trawnley, a young man from Texas and Louisiana who goes to Montana in search of his father, a man who had abandoned his family and lost his way in life. Although Moss found his father, he decided not to follow in his dissolute dad’s footsteps. When an opportunity to enroll in the CCC was presented to Moss, he signed up. During his “hitch” (a six-month enrollment in the CCC), Moss learned the value of hard work, and the importance of taking responsibility for his own future. This PDF of Socratic Seminar Questions contains both a student question section as well as a thorough answer key section for HITCH. There are 48 carefully crafted questions which first summarize the key events in a chapter and then challenge students to find details, offer opinions, make predictions, compare or contrast events, draw conclusions, or brainstorm possible answers. The last question, Question 48, requires a more detailed and lengthy response from the students, asking them to include ideas found throughout the entire book. All of the questions can be used to facilitate in-class Socratic Seminar discussions about the novel. They can also be used for other purposes, such as homework assignments or classroom quizzes. The answers the students give will help teachers gauge whether or not students have read and understand the important ideas presented in the novel. It is my hope that these Socratic Seminar Questions will be helpful to teachers who present HITCH to their students. I believe that as the students read the story they will find that the companion questions will help them develop critical thinking skills in English and Language Arts. Common Core Standards for Reading and Writing for grades seven through nine are included at the end of this PDF. If you find that these questions are helpful to your students, please contact me with the names of other novels that you use in class and I will see if I can write questions for those books. My email address is: gary.ciesla@gmail.com . Thank you. You can find similar resources in my store!

Percentages of quantities with and without visual support - 6th Grade
Math, Percentages, Grade 5, 6, 7, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
Introducing percentages can be helped by approaching it with informal methods of calculation supported by a visual representation before moving onto the standard algorithms with word based problems at a laters stage This is what this resource aims to do by using: - the equivalence of 50%, 25% & 75% and their fractions 1/2, 1/4 & 3/4 - the knowledge that 10% =1/10 and 1/10th of any multiple of 10 or 100 can easily be found by removing the last zero of the number. From here students can then move on to calculating: - 5% of quantities (1/2 of 10%) or - 1% (or multiples of 1%) of quantities, equivalent to 1/10th of a tenth. The Worksheets and Teaching Resources are set at 5 levels 1. 10%, 25%, 50%, & 75% of multiples of 100 2. 10%,20%,30% ........90%, of multiples of 10 3. 10%,20%,30% ........90% of multiples of 100 4. 5%,10%,15% ...... 95% of multiples of 10 5. Any percentage of multiples of 100 Answers will always be whole numbers. How many worksheets are in each set ? Lots and lots. At the click of a button all numbers are randomised, so the questions change every time. This will allow you to create as many new worksheets you will need for practice throughout the year (classwork, homework, revision, fillers etc) or even give small groups of students in your class different sets of questions either at the same level or differentiated . Note These resources are PDF documents and work with the official Adobe Acrobat Reader on Windows or Mac computers with the randomising buttons also working via a touchscreen (PC or Mac)or on an Interactive Whiteboard. Common Core Standard partly covered CCSS6.RP.A.3c Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity .... Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills MA.6.4.F partly covered The student is expected to: represent benchmark fractions and percents such as 1%, 10%, 25%, 33 1/3%, and multiples of these values using 10 by 10 grids, strip diagrams , number lines, and numbers;

Longtime fans have been asking us to make this long vowel resource for a while, and we have finally decided to take the plunge. It turned out to be a pretty awesome resource. First off, use the PDF based digital file to introduce these long vowel sounds to your students. You just open the file and show it full screen. Then use the arrow keys to go from one page to another. This way you can also stop the slideshow if something is too difficult for your students. After this, you can give them the digital multiple choice test. The correct answer will be circled in green and the incorrect ones are red. This makes it abundantly clear what the right answer is. But there are a bunch of printable files as well. How about the vocab lists en tests? And then there are the flash cards too, either with round or with sharp corners. All and all, a very complete resource to practice long vowel sounds.
