Here is a ready-to-go terrestrial and aquatic biomes science research project for your students in 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th grade. Each student will choose a terrestrial or aquatic biome, complete focused research about it, and create an organized project with paragraphs and visuals to share their learning. How to Use: •Print pages 2-13 for each student. •Page 2 has clear instructions for the project including a website students can use to select their biome, places to write due dates, and a checklist to keep students on track. •Page 3 has seven different prompts for students to research. Each student needs to pick at least four prompts to include in their unique project. •Pages 4-6 are graphic organizers for your students to use as they take notes and record their research sources (page 6 is optional). •Pages 7-9 are templates for students to use to write at least four paragraphs about their biome (page 9 is optional). They could also type and print these paragraphs instead. •Page 10 is for students to draw plants that are found in their biome. •Page 11 is for students to draw animals that are found in their biome. •Page 12 is a title page for the project. •Page 13 is a rubric you can use to assess the project. Let students see it at the beginning of the project so they know what the expectations are. Over several weeks, your students can complete research on their biome, write and proofread their paragraphs, and draw the visual components of their project. Students need to partition their hypothetical party budget across varied cost categories like food, decorations and entertainment by employing basic percent in decimal form and understanding addition and multiplication of decimals. For example, they might decide to spend 50% of their budget on food because that is their favourite part of a party. They will calculate 50% of their total budget. This skill application brings relevance to numbers through experiential learning. You can decide if students should complete calculations by hand or if using a calculator is allowed. Also, a complete sample answer key is included that you can show to your students to demonstrate the task. Finally, students complete shopping research and choose items online or in store flyers. This fosters strategic thinking when managing limited resources. Middle School Math Stations: or Centers: Percent, Decimals, Fractions

Even when students are in middle school or the intermediate grades, they benefit from a variety of teaching strategies including the use of stations or centres! But they are a lot of work to prepare! This ready-to-go set of 5 stations will supplement a unit about fractions, decimals, and percent. Ways to Use: You can break your class into 5 groups and have them rotate one at a time through the centres, giving them 10-20 minutes at each one. Or, start students at certain centres and then allow them to move around at their own pace as long as no one centre gets too full. I find these are a great resource as you are finishing your unit and preparing for the unit test. Station 1: Students solve four word problems using percentages. (optional: set out white boards for students to use) Station 2: Students play a game to practice calculating sales & tax. (supplies needed: 6-sided dice) Station 3: Students design a floor plan and calculate what percent of the space each room occupies. Station 4: Students practice converting between percent, decimals, and fractions and play an online game . (optional: set out laptops or tablets for the online game extension) Station 5: Students apply what they have learned to a real-life problem, and practice writing and drawing about their mathematical thinking. Grades to Use With: These stations work well for grades 5-7 or high school special education classes. Standards: CCSS6.RP.A.3c Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part and the percent. CCSS7.RP.A.2a Decide whether two quantities are in a proportional relationship, e.g., by testing for equivalent ratios in a table or graphing on a coordinate plane and observing whether the graph is a straight line through the origin.
