The Southern Colonies in North America, a classroom skit
Social Studies, History, History: USA, Grade 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Activities
This play complements the other plays I have on TeachSimple about the colonial era in American History. You can also find the Life in the Middle Colonies and Life in the New England Colonies plays here. My 7th graders have enjoyed these for years. However, these work well for all grades between 6th and 12th. History comes alive in the classroom when students are using plays and skits. Reader's Theater is a great way to enhance any lesson, including the southern colonies, either to introduce some of the characteristics of this region or reinforce what you have been teaching. There are four roles in this play. It will take about 15-20 minutes to complete. Although the play was created by me it is based on an actual historical figure of that time - Henry Middleton and the Middleton family. The Middleton Plantation still exists in the Charleston area in South Carolina. The gardens he started are still there. All of my skits are written to engage students and get them thinking. This is what I call a "lesson enhancer". It will help add to any lesson on life in the southern English provinces.

Clip It & Flip It Counting Tally Marks
Math, Early Math, Numbers, Kindergarten, Preschool, Grade 1, Activities
Such a fun way to practice tally marks. These Clip It and Flip It Cards are a great self checking math activity for centers or independent work. Answers print on the back of each card for self-checking independence. This also makes a perfect activity for early finishers or for morning activities while teachers are taking attendance and other duties. These Clip It and Flip It Cards can be placed in differentiated work baskets, used with tutors, or as a great take home activity . Students look at the card, count or subtilize to determine the answer, and clip their selection with a clothes pin or other clip you provide. They then flip the card to check their answer, remove the clip and repeat with another card. The clip and flip activity also works fine motor skills and is great for the pincer grasp. Large cards, and answer choices along the bottom of cards for ease for left- and right-handed students. Straight line cutting makes it easier for you to prep. I place my clip cards in a 5 x 7 photo case or a clear pencil box with a couple of clothespins and use for center activities (2 students per center). A co-worker stores them in pencil bags and uses them for morning work for the students while she takes attendance and lunch count. Another teacher I know printed the front pages only, and used them in small group with clear counters, so she could see if they were counting or subtilizing and if they were correct. I created these for my Kindergarten Classroom and have also used them with a few of my struggling second grade students as well as my older special needs students. 20 clip cards are included. Print pages 6 - 17 on double-sided, short edge binding.
