Triangle Dice Game: Isosceles, Scalene, Equilateral, Right, Acute, Obtuse

Here's a deceptively simple dice game to practice identifying and creating six kinds of triangles. Three are classified by their angles: acute, right, and obtuse. Three are classified by their side lengths: scalene, equilateral, and isosceles. Use this game to reinforce the definitions of each of these six triangles in a geometry/measurement unit. Students work independently or in small groups. Each player needs two dice. They roll them and use the two numbers as side lengths in centimetres for a triangle. They draw the triangle in one of the boxes on their paper and measure and label the third side length. Here's where the strategy and critical thinking come in. Can students make six kinds of triangles in less than six turns? Maybe! If they get some lucky rolls! For example, if a student gets a roll with two of the same numbers, they should make an isosceles or equilateral triangle (depending on what angles they draw). But this triangle will also be an acute triangle (or an isosceles right triangle). Clever students (with lucky rolls) should be able to complete the task in less than six turns. Standards: CCSS 4.G.A.2 Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles. CCSS 7.G.A.2 Draw (freehand, with ruler and protractor, and with technology) geometric shapes with given conditions. Focus on constructing triangles from three measures of angles or sides, noticing when the conditions determine a unique triangle, more than one triangle, or no triangle. Grades: This game works well in classes from grades 4-7. Ideally students know how to use a ruler and a protractor. This fully editable Lab Station Activity on the Circulatory System is meant to get your kids out of their seats and engaged in the content. Each station not only offers a unique opportunity to test your students knowledge (offer an opinion, answer questions based on a video or reading, draw, etc.), but also provides a fantastic learning opportunity where your kids are learning through assessment. Each station comes with a description card while some also contain more detailed instructions, a reading, questions to answer, etc. Students are equipped with a recording sheet (passport) to write their answers. There is almost no prep for you. Simply print the cards, lay them out around the room and you're all set. An answer key is also provided where applicable. These station cards are meant to be used as a lab activity but can also be utilized in a review task before a test or a quiz. Used either way, your students will love it! Students can practice reading comprehension skills with these AN word family mats. Students can practice reading AN words in isolation and in the context of sentences. The words in this set follow a CVC or CCVC spelling pattern. Included in this resource: This resource includes one word mat and one sentence mat, both for reading AN words in insolation and in context. There are also picture cards that correspond with each word and sentence. To complete this activity , students will read each AN word or sentence on the mat and then match the corresponding pictures. Students can work independently or with a partner to complete this activity . How to Use these AM word Family Mats: The students can simply lay the images on top of the word or sentence. They can be placed in a file folder utilizing hook and loop fasteners to attach the images. A magnetic activity can be created by using a baking sheet and magnets to affix the images. Students will love the hands-on nature of this activity . The bold and colorful images will capture students' attention, and the easy to recognize pictures are sure to keep students engaged in learning. These literacy activities allow students to practice target words both in the context of sentences and in isolation. Where can these mats be used? Literacy Center - Students can work independently or with a partner to read these words Morning Tub or Basket - The cards can be placed in a morning bin for students to work on as students arrive to class. Small Group Activity - The teacher can choose a small group of students or a specific group of words for students to work on in a small group setting with the teacher. Hands On Assessment - The teacher can use these to test students on reading the target words in context or in isolation. Skills assessed through this activity : Reading AN words in context of a sentence and in isolation Reading comprehension The low-prep nature of this AM words matching mats activity makes it an easy to assign activity . The mats simply need to be printed out, while the matching cards need to be printed and cut. Lamination is optional for increased durability. Once created, this resource can be used repeatedly in literacy centers or small group activities, providing ongoing support for students' learning journey.

Synonyms Card Sort This card sort activity is intended for practice identifying pairs of synonyms. The five sets of cards contain 14 cards each. The student may work on the card sort independently or with a partner. *Note that there is often more than one synonym for a given word. Students should choose the best match from the cards provided. Included in this material · 5 sets of synonym cards (7 pairs of synonyms per set) · Answer key · Recording sheet Words Used in the Sorts Set 1: big/large, sick/ill, jump/leap, small/little, glad/happy, mad/angry, start/begin Set 2: own/have, bag/sack, sad/unhappy, yell/shout, car/auto, over/above, make/build Set 3: hat/cap, house/home, fast/quick, cold/cool, run/jog, shut/close, rabbit/bunny Set 4: talk/speak, baby/infant, pail/bucket, pal/friend, good/fine, dirty/messy, see/look Set 5: cry/sob, sip/drink, walk/stroll, fix/repair, rock/stone, road/street, smell/sniff Using the Card Sorts Before use, print, laminate, and cut the cards to be used. It is highly recommended to print on card stock 1. Set out the heading card for the set being used (ex: Synonyms Set 1). 2. Choose a card and place it on the work surface. Take a second card and decide if it is a synonym for the card already out. If so, place it next to the synonym. If not, place the card below to create a column. 3. Continue until all cards are sorted, creating pairs of synonyms. If a child is unsure of the meaning of a word, encourage the use of resources – a friend, dictionary, or thesaurus. 4. Check work with the answer key. 5. Record work in a language notebook or on the included recording sheet. Extension Activity If desired, have students do an extension after completing the card sort. To check their understanding, have them write an additional synonym for several of the pairs of synonyms matched, if possible. Have thesauruses available for use as resources!
