Twelve stories originally published in Highlights for Children, including 'Ben Can Do Ten,' 'Wait and See!,' 'Space Day,' and 'One Good Turn,' are arranged by reading difficulty and paired with a five-page lesson each. Every lesson opens with the two-page story, followed by a 'Comprehension Skills' page of multiple-choice questions on main idea, sequencing, character, or cause and effect, a 'Reading Power' page where students fill in a cloze passage summarizing the story from context, and a 'Thinking Skills' page of open-ended short-answer questions. The stories span fiction, folktales, biography, mythology, history, science, and nature study, selected and leveled using the Degrees of Reading Power (DRP) readability system. A full answer key for every multiple-choice section and an IRA/NCTE standards alignment page close out the book.

This language arts-based resource is designed for grade 4. Basic reading skills are developed through the use of this resource. High-interest stories are presented in a way that encourages students to start reading. Students learn what they have read through literal and inferential comprehension. Each story presented in this resource falls within the appropriate grade 4 readability range—from 39 to 52 Degrees of Reading Power (DRP) units. Aligned to the International Reading Association and National Council of Teachers of English Standards 1 and 3.
