If you are searching for resources to support the reading comprehension of your students, you’ll want something more than just answering multiple choice questions. Questioning is certainly a way to assess comprehension, but there are other components that can be included to assess this skill as well. This is a “The Place for Us” Comprehension Activity. It is for elementary students in 2nd – 4th grade. The objective is for students to demonstrate understanding of a passage by correctly completing given tasks. There are 4 pages included. The breakdown is as follows: Page 1 – A page long reading passage titled “The Place for Us.” You can read this as a whole group, have students read it with a partner or have them read it independently. Encourage students to highlight or circle words or parts of the story that feel important to them. Page 2 – A vocabulary graphic organizer . Students will find the 3 bolded words from the story and use them on this page. For each word, students will write a definition, give an example, illustrate a picture, and use the word in a sentence. Page 3 – Problem and Solution Graphic Organizer . Students will use the graphic organizers to outline details from the story in order to uncover the problem and solution. Page 4 – Asking and Answering Questions. Students will write two questions that they might ask someone to answer about the text under the “question” headings below. A friend will underline the answer in the text in purple and write the answer below. Intro to Systems of Equations Activityy

This is an Intro to Systems of Equations Introduction Activity that your high school students will love. This is an activity designed for 9th – 10th grade students. It is a cooperative partner activity. Purpose of the lesson: For students to see that a system of equations involves two equations with 2 variables and that the solution is when the values of the variables in one equation “match” the values in the other equation. For students to see multiple representations of systems (table, graph, equations) and for them to see how the solution shows up in each representation. For students to see systems of equations in a concrete, relatable way (dropping chips in a cup) before moving to the abstract (equations without context). The activity provides a low entry point for all students to engage and increases in rigor as the lesson progresses. This PowerPoint will begin with a Do Now that will set the foundation for the activity. Students will be posed with 2 essential questions, that serve as the objectives for them. Each slide provides steps for students to complete as well as a time limit for completion. This is an editable presentation, so you will be able to tweak times to fit your students’ needs. This homework activity teaches students about the sectional differences between the different regions of the United States which grew during the 19th century. THE NORTH Students learn about the growth of factories and other industries and the importance of tariffs to protect against foreign competition. Also introduces students to the growing anti-slavery movement in many northern states. THE SOUTH Covers the major crops grown in the southern states and the importance of slave labor. Also explains southern opposition to tariffs which hurt their trading relations with other nations, especially Great Britain. THE WEST Teaches about the desire of many westerners to gain government funding for roads and canals as well as their opposition to the expansion of slavery into new territories. ACTIVITIES Students can work on a map activity to illustrate and summarize the different sectional differences (examples included in the file). There is also a small crossword activity which students can use to help them research through the reading sheets. PRESENTATION Includes a short Powerpoint presentation with images and enlarged reading sections to help guide teachers and students through the materials. FILE TYPES Files come in pdf and editable Powerpoint formats for you to make any changes you need.
