This is a pack of 8 AR spelling puzzles. How do the AR spelling puzzles help with phonics? Some children have difficulty understanding that two letters can make one sound. As the letters AR are on one part of the picture card - together - the physical manipulation of one piece of the puzzle, with two letters and one sound helps the child to understand. Who are they for? Any child needing help to hear the letters AR as one sound in words. They can be used in the Early Years (Pre-K and K) or for Early intervention, or for Special Needs. Instructions (included in the download): Puzzle Type 1: Cut around the whole of each mini puzzle (4 per page) and then cut each picture into its divisions. To play: ·The child chooses any card. S/he must the find the remaining part/s of the picture to fit together to complete each word. ·As the child does this the teacher should draw the child’s attention to the letters on each card. Ask questions such as: ‘What does ‘farm’ begin with? ‘So ‘f’ comes first’. ‘What sound can you hear next? f-ar?’ ‘Can you find the piece with ‘ar’?’ ‘What sound does ‘farm’ end with?’ ‘Can you find the last piece with ‘m’?’ ·Once each picture is formed, the child should then sound out the word, moving each piece to the right as it is sounded. Emphasise the saying of one sound ‘ar’ for the letters ‘ar’ together. Puzzle Type 2: These puzzles should be completed after Puzzle Type 1. They consolidate learning. Cut each picture puzzle out. Cut out the separate letter cards. To Play: The child chooses a picture. The child sounds out the word: s-t-ar; c-ar; f-ar-m; sh-ar-k; b-ar-n; d-ar-t; c-ar-d; ar-m; c-ar-t; p-ar-k. Vocabulary BINGO Game

Vocabulary BINGO Game
ELA, Language Development, Vocabulary, Grade 2, 3, 4, 5, Activities, Games

As teachers, we know the major impact that literacy has on our lives. It is the most fundamental skill that is necessary in order to gain the knowledge of anything else that may peak our interests. If nothing else is instilled in our students, let the ability and love of reading be the goal we have for them. It all begins at a young age, from chewing on baby books, to exploring picture books, to being read to by a beloved adult in their lives. However, as teachers, we have a huge task set before us when it comes to keeping that thirst for knowledge alive in our students. The best thing we can do for them is build their confidence by taking slow and steady steps. This is a Vocabulary BINGO Game that is great for any and all students across any subject. Whether your 3rd grade students need practice with their science vocabulary or your 2nd grade students need practice with math vocabulary, this bingo game will help! How To Use This Resource: Pass out the BINGO cards to the students. (You may choose to laminate the cards and have the students use dry erase markers so that you can reuse them.) Have them write a vocabulary word in each space. Give the letter of B-I-N-G-O and read the definition of a word.* Students should be able to determine what word you defined and mark the square if they have it under the letter you said. (You can have them mark it by putting a dot or star in the square or by having them circle it or put a slash mark through it.) Students should say “Bingo” when they get 5 words in a row. As an extra incentive, provide a prize for winners. It could be something as simple as a free homework pass or a chance to tell a quick story about something they did over the weekend. *You can adjust the rigor of this lesson by giving synonyms or antonyms for this game instead of the definition. I hope you enjoy! Charlotte's Web Activity Compare Characters

Charlotte's Web Activity Compare Characters
ELA, Reading, Reading Comprehension, Literature, Grade 2, 3, 4, Activities

In this activity, students practice the skill of comparing characters from the novel Charlotte's Web, by E.B. White. Graphic organizers can be a great way to help students organize their thoughts. The graphic organizer I chose for this activity is a Venn Diagram . Venn Diagrams are perfect for comparing and contrasting two things. There are several characters in Charlotte's Web that work well for this activity. I've created four worksheets where students will be comparing Charlotte and Wilbur, Charlotte and Fern, Wilbur and Templeton, and Templeton and Avery. This activity works well with second through fourth graders who have read the story. You could hand out the graphic organizers at the beginning of reading have students add to them as you read through the book. Or, you could wait until you've finished reading. Depending on the level of your students, you could have them list words to describe the characters on a sheet of paper. They could then use that when filling out these diagrams. A great extension to this activity would be if you want students to write a paragraph comparing the two characters. The graphic organizer would help them organize their thoughts into a good paragraph.
