Truman and the Dropping of the Atomic Bomb: Graphic Organizer
Social Studies, History, History: USA, Grade 8, 9, 10, 11, Teacher Tools, Graphic Organizers
Harry S. Truman, the 33rd President of the United States, played a pivotal role in the development and use of atomic bombs during World War II. Truman assumed the presidency on April 12, 1945, following the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. At that time, the Manhattan Project , a secret research program focused on developing atomic weapons, was already underway. As President, Truman was faced with a difficult decision regarding the use of atomic bombs against Japan. The Manhattan Project had successfully created two atomic bombs, and Truman had to decide whether to deploy them as a means to end the war. After the war, Truman focused on preventing the spread of nuclear weapons. He supported the creation of the United Nations and played a key role in establishing the Baruch Plan, which proposed international control of atomic energy to prevent further proliferation. Truman's decision to use atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki remains one of the most consequential actions of his presidency. It ushered in the nuclear age, shaped the course of history, and sparked ongoing discussions about the use and ethics of atomic weapons. Teacher-prepared notes show students what is important and how ideas relate, and offer a model for how students should take notes themselves (Marzano et al., 2001). This graphic organizer gives students two primary source quotes regarding Truman's use of the bomb. The notes then explain some pro/con arguments about the use of the bomb. Lastly, the notes give students a chance to look at the six immediate effects of the bomb. Comes with a fill-in-the-blank version. Clipart Credit: By PrincePadania

The New Deal was a series of economic programs and reforms implemented in the United States during the 1930s by President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR). May Write the Room Literacy Center and World Wall Cards
ELA, Language Development, Phonics, Grade 1, Centers, Activities
My student's favorite center to do for word work is always the Write the Room center . I give a small group of 3-5 students a clip board and the "word hunt" paper. They walk around the room with their board, paper, and a pencil and try to find all 24 words that I put scattered around the classroom. They always feel such a sense of pride when they find all 24 words! This set of words is themed for the month of MAY. There are word cards for Mother's Day, Memorial Day, gardening, bugs, grilling, and weather associated with April. I like to print the cards in color and laminate them for durability (it also keeps them ready to use for the next year). I hope your kiddos enjoy this center as much as my own students do! You can also use these cards on your word wall for your students to reference when doing writing activities. There are lots of times during the month of MAY that my students ask me how to spell certain words and (now with these cards) I just tell them to go to the word wall to find it! When using them for the word wall I put magnetic tab on the back of each laminated card so students can easily find, borrow, and put back my word wall words (that are on a magnetized white board surface).

The Moral of the Story: Income Inequality in Familiar Tales: An Integrated ELA and Social Studies Lesson
Social Studies, Life Studies, ELA, Economics, Finance, Reading, Reading Comprehension, Literature, Grade 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, Worksheets & Printables, Worksheets
This lesson introduces middle school students to the basic ideas of capitalism and income inequality using familiar stories as reference points. Students will take notes on a handout and consider whether they think it's fair that the 26 richest people on earth have as much money as 3.8 billion other people. They will learn about the moral of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol: Dickens thinks Scrooge is too greedy and that he should share his wealth with others- especially his hard-working clerk, Bob Cratchit. Next, they discover the message in the popular fairy tale Jack and the Beanstalk: one could argue the original author of this tale thinks Jack and his mom should not be living in poverty while the giant has piles of gold. Then, they choose a story or novel of their own that addresses these issues and untangle that author’s specific message. Finally, they complete a personal reflection of what they have learned and what they think about equality in society. There are no wrong answers here- some students may think changes should be made, while others may think our system is working well. This is a developmentally-appropriate way to start a discussion about social issues including income inequality, wealth hoarding, progressive taxation, basic income, human rights, and more. It is also a good way to review parts of a story: plot, characters, moral, and theme. Grades to Use With: This lesson is designed for students in the middle years (5-9) and can be used in a social studies or language arts class.
