Restate Answer Prove - RAP Constructed Response Anchor Charts
ELA, Reading, Reading Comprehension, Strategies, Writing, Grade 3, 4, 5, Anchor Charts, Teacher Tools
Do your students struggle to respond to constructed response or short answer questions using complete sentences and details from the text? This Restate, Answer, Prove - R.A.P. Constructed Response Anchor Chart Set is the perfect tool that will have your students writing clear, well thought out responses using text evidence in no time. In my early years of teaching , I really struggled to get my students to respond to short answer or constructed response questions in complete sentences . Most days, they would read the questions then write down the one or two words that simply answered the question and nothing more. They were looking to finish their assignments and tests as quickly as possible, and they had technically done their job by providing an answer. However, anyone without background information from the text would have no idea what their answer meant. Eventually, I heard about the Restate, Answer, Prove, or RAP method and brought it to my class. However, it didn’t give me the great responses I was looking for – it needed more. So, I brought in the color coding that I implemented in this anchor chart resource. As I introduced the RAP method with my anchor charts , I really scaffolded my instruction with the color coding. Students would write in the corresponding color for each step ( Pink for restate, green for answer, and purple for prove. ) or highlight that section to match our anchor charts . This color coding was exactly what they needed to make sure they were including each step. If they didn’t have a pink, green, and purple section to their answer, they knew they needed to go back and fix their answers, so they had all 3 components – Restate, Answer, and Prove. This resource is a great tool for you to utilize throughout the entire school year . First, when you are introducing the RAP method. Then, when you are referring to it and practicing it throughout the year. They are also a great review tool to use before state testing each year. Here is what you get : ✨ Teacher Guide ✨ Restate Poster ✨ Answer Poster ✨ Prove Poster – using details from the text option ✨ Prove Poster – by quoting the text option You are going to love these anchor charts because they really help those students who struggle with writing their own responses . Utilizing the color-coding system allows you to break down each step for those students who don’t naturally write complete sentences with text support when responding to short answer or constructed response questions. You don’t need any special supplies to help your students to start implementing the color system when writing RAP answers. Just use the markers, colored pencils, or highlighters you already have in your classroom . And don’t worry, you won’t always have to rely on the color coding; as students have practice and gain more confidence, you can gradually take these supports away, and they will be able to construct great written responses without going back to highlight or change what color they are writing with as they construct their answer. This resource is also great because it’s no prep ! Just print and you are ready to start implementing this tool in your lessons! Teachers like you said . . . ❤️ “This was a great tool to teach and encourage my students to use text evidence in their answers to comprehension questions.” – Michelle B. ❤️ “Straightforward and clear.” – Tara P. © Tales from Title
