Photosynthesis Lesson, Worksheets, and Experiments for 5th, 6th, and 7th Grade Science I created this resource for teachers and parents who want a straightforward and engaging way to introduce photosynthesis to upper-elementary and middle-grade learners. I put together reading, comprehension questions and simple experiments in this lesson. It gives students a chance to learn the concept of photosynthesis step by step, while still keeping the lesson easy to teach and enjoyable for kids. What’s inside? A detailed reading passage that explains photosynthesis in clear, student-friendly language Seven comprehension questions with an answer key Three experiment guides that show photosynthesis in action Discussion questions for each experiment, along with suggested answers Safety notes and precautions for all hands-on activities Anchor charts to support visual understanding A True/False activity (answer key is included) A diagram page that helps students label and understand the photosynthesis process A creative dialogue-writing worksheet related to photosynthesis Complete answer keys for every worksheet is included Resource highlights I wrote this reading passage with older elementary and younger middle-school students in mind. This lesson is clear enough for independent reading but still detailed enough for science instruction. The experiments use materials that are easy to find and take students beyond the textbook. All the discussion questions give structure to classroom conversations and help students connect what they read with what they observe. There’s also a creative writing component for teachers who like to include literacy work in their science lessons. Ways to use this resource: Reading activity: Introduce the topic with the passage and ask the students to solve all the comprehension questions. Science lessons: Use the three experiments given inside to deepen understanding and encourage observation. Let’s be honest, teaching "Theme" is tough. It is one of the most abstract concepts for upper elementary students to grasp. If I had a nickel for every time I asked a student, "What is the theme of this story?" and they just retold the entire plot back to me, I’d have a lot of nickels. It is a classic struggle in grades 3-6. They constantly mix up the "universal lesson" (Theme) with the specific summary (Main Idea). I designed this resource pack simply because I needed better tools to handle this confusion in my own classroom. I needed visuals that made sense to kids right away, and I needed materials that didn't take me hours to prep. The hand-drawn style is intentional to make it feel friendly and approachable for students. Here is exactly what you get in this download (it’s all ready to print and use): 4 Classroom Anchor Charts: These are meant to be hung up as constant reminders. The most valuable one here is the side-by-side comparison chart of "Theme vs. Main Idea." It really helps stop the confusion. There is also a "Common Themes List" to help students who struggle to find the right vocabulary. Interactive Notebook Pages: I made a black-and-white, single-page version of the four charts. Students can cut these out and glue them into their reading journals. They love coloring them in while I teach, and it gives them a personal reference tool. The "Theme Explorer" Worksheet: This page forces students to slow down. It has separate boxes for the Main Idea and the Theme, and crucially, asks for text evidence to back up their thinking. It's great for independent reading accountability. Quick Exit Tickets: A simple tool for the last five minutes of class.
