Guided Reading is a research-based instruction process whereby the teacher works with small grouping of students being equal in a particular reading achievement level. The teacher provides for each reader's development of effective reading competencies. However different than in the earlier days of reading groups, small and temporary groups are flexible and dynamic. The observance and evaluation of the progress of readers are done by teachers on a systematic basis. Thus, grouping and regrouping students is based on the strengths of students and the intense changing needs throughout their reading development. In the 1960s in New Zealand, Guided Reading was developed. It was enhanced over the years after it arrived in the United States thanks to educators like Gay Su Pinnell and Lesley Fountas. In 1996, Fountas & Pinnell published their enormously influential book, Guided Reading: Good First Teaching for All Children (Heinemann). This book changed how reading was taught, and it is still taught today to over a million teachers worldwide. The aim of Guided Reading lessons is to develop effective readers. A set of 13 books is bundled together with all 13 worksheets of the Guided Reading series for grades KG-12. There are lesson plans and different activities for every grade, with the answers in the end section of the worksheet.

This CVC unit is engaging for students as they practice reading and learning the short vowel sounds while students cut and make the words, trace the words, write the words, and stamp out the words. Reading short vowel / rhyming words is an introduction to reading. Repetitive practice of reading these words is also another fundamental practice to help students read. In this unit, students will practice word families that have the same ending. Teach students that word families rhyme and only have a different beginning sound. For each word family, students will practice making, tracing, writing, or stamping six different words. Some of the words are proper nouns or names given to people or pets. There are also nonsensical words that are not real. The purpose of these words is to teach how to sound out words only within the same word family. File contains the following word family worksheets : ad, an, at, ed, en, et, in, ip, it, og, op, ot, ug, un, ut. It also includes all the letters needed to cut out for the "make it" worksheets . Phonics Presentations: OR Lesson This is a simply taught, phonic lesson, to teach the sound 'or'. The video format can be easily shared. There is no distracting music, or any unnecessary pictures. Who is the Or video lesson for? It is suitable for all ages and abilities, including those with special needs. An adult should sit with the child for maximum benefit. It is better if an adult teaches the child him/herself, so this video can also be used to see how a phonic lesson can be taught, simply and cheaply at home. Parents can use it as a home-education resource. It can be used by parents to learn how to teach their child, breaking each skill up into tiny steps so needed by those with a special need. Lesson Format: The lesson begins with training the child's ear to hear the new sound /or/ in words. The child is then encouraged to finger trace the letters 'or' while saying /or/ and then to write the sound /or/. Next, the pupil is led into and activity where s/he must see the /or/ sound in words. This leads on into spelling words with /or/: short, torch, storm, thorn and finally horse with the silent 'e'. Finally, the pupil is given three sentences to read containing words with the sounds /or/. As a result, I created the first of what I hope to be a series of reading comprehension and guided reading activity packs to make learning more fun for early elementary students as well as special education students and those with special needs in the areas of speech and communication. The book, "Don't Let the Pigeon Stay up Late," is required reading in order for students to complete all of the activities. It is available for purchase at Amazon and at Mo Willems own website.
