Final e/Silent e/split digraphs Phonic Game: Build a Tower!
ELA, Special Resources, Language Development, Phonics, Reading, Special Education Needs (SEN), Not Grade Specific, Activities, Games
Here is an ultra fun game to help pupils learn to 'Spot the 'e''' and change from vowel sound to vowel name! This game covers i/i-e a/a-e o/o-e When introducing the Final e/silent ‘e’/split digraphs/CVCV words, many children have difficulty quickly changing vowel names to vowel sounds and vice versa. This game can help to take the stress out of learning. How to play The game involves each player having a baseboard upon which to build his/her tower. Players aim to be the first to build their tower and win! Word cards containing both silent 'e' and CVC words are scattered on the table - with an 'oops' card hidden amongst them! Players take turns to choose a card. If it is read correctly, the player places it on his/her baseboard and begins to build a tower. Teachers and parents may give the child as much help as needed to read each word and turn it into a teaching opportunity. With more confident children, you can change the rules so that the card is returned face down to the table if it is not read correctly. If a player chooses the 'Oops' card, then the whole tower is wiped off the player's board and the cards are returned to the table, face down and play continues until someone manages to build their tower. Your pupils will have so much fun they will forget that they are learning! Games take the pain out of learning! Ease of preparation: The game is easy to make: simply print the baseboards and desired word cards, then cut up the word cards. Full instructions included Who can use the 'Spot the 'e' game? CVC Words Fishing Game
ELA, Language Development, Phonics, Preschool, Activities, Games
This CVC Words Fishing Game is a simple game to give children plenty of practice in reading CVC words. They will have so much fun they will forget the hard work! How to play CVC Words Fishing Game: A game for 2 players. Simply choose and place 12 words face down on the table. The child picks up a fish ‘catches it’ and sounds it out to read it. If the child reads the word successfully, then the fish is placed back into the sea, on the player's board. Any words not read correctly should be placed back on the table. The first player to complete her/his board is the winner. Tips for playing However, the parent/teacher wishes the child to want to play again and succeed, so give the child as much help as needed by modelling how to sound out the word. It is easy for the adult to lose - just make sure the child has to help you sound out the word and get it wrong (they will love that!) and yours has to go back on the table sometimes. They win and get double sounding out practice! What is included? 2 game boards Full instructions 90+ word cards Two sets of words are given for each middle vowel sound - the first set of words has an initial sound that can be held onto which is ideal for beginner readers.

Students can use dot markers to mark the letters, they can color in the letter or use stickers to cover the letters. The cut and paste page allows students to work with scissor skills to cut out examples of the letter from either printed materials, like magazines or newspapers, or students can use the letters provided at the bottom of the page. The trace and write page allows students to practice tracing and writing the capital and lowercase forms of the letter. The beginnings sound page has students coloring the pictures that begin with the letter. The trace and draw page has students tracing a word that begins with the letter, then drawing a picture to represent that word. When to Use: Literacy Centers - This flip book can be placed in a literacy center for students to work on identifying the letter. Morning Work - This flip book is a perfect morning work activity. Doing one or two pages each morning, students can finish one flip book a week. Homework - These flip books can be sent home for parents to work with letter recognition with their children.
