How to Make Pancakes | Writing and Sequencing Activity
ELA, Writing, Grade 1, 2, 3, Activities
This cross-curricular resource uses students’ interest in pancakes to creatively teach emerging writers the basics of crafting step-by-step “how-to” explanations. The materials are designed to break down the cooking process into simple, engaging sequences that appeal to young students. Various printable templates guide children to color, cut out, organize, and describe the methodology for mixing up and cooking delicious pancakes. The curriculum includes two anchor charts explaining the key traits of procedural writing and common transitional words to cement understanding. A sample how-to paragraph models the desired format, while two leveled editing checklists provide developmentally-appropriate guidance for revising student work. Additionally, teachers receive a set of vivid sequencing cards demonstrating the pancake making procedure as well as individual vocabulary word cards that can be displayed or matched to corresponding images. Primary workbook-style templates prompt students to identify the necessary kitchen tools, ingredients, safety considerations, and chronological steps required to complete the task. Extensions encourage students to describe favorite pancake toppings, invent new recipes, or craft narratives around pancake characters. A final draft pancake stack provides the entertaining possibility of actually frying up the breakfast treat in class once the process has been clearly mapped. With opportunities to strengthen fine motor skills through coloring, organizing logical sequences, copying transition words, controlled writing practice, and crafting pancake-inspired stories, students gain confidence applying core procedural writing techniques to a delicious topic that feeds imagination. The cross-disciplinary focus creatively integrates science and literacy learning through hands-on engagement centered around a beloved breakfast food. This resource allows flexible implementation ranging from whole group pancake demonstrations to individual student work. Both emerging and early writers will be eager to dive into the thematic printables and activities built around a favorite classroom treat. Beginning Sounds Shopping Game
Special Resources, ELA, Special Education Needs (SEN), Language Development, Phonics, Vocabulary, Kindergarten, Preschool, Activities, Games
This game pack has been designed to give children much practice of hearing the initial (or beginning) sound of a word, that very first crucial skill in learning to read and spell using phonics. It is hoped that as the child has fun playing the games that the child's phonetic awareness can be developed. To make: There are three ways in which you can play the ‘Shopping Game’. 1. Fill the Trolley: Choose the empty shopping trolleys as baseboards and cut up the picture cards. 2. Empty the Trolley! Choose the full trolleys as baseboards and ‘empty’ the food out of the trolley. 3. Going Shopping! Choose the shopping lists as baseboards and cut up the picture cards. The games are all for 2 players. Choose which game you will play (first!) and print the necessary pages. Laminating the pieces will make them last longer if you will be playing with multiple children. To play: Talk about each of the picture cards. Check that the child can name the food type and think about the initial sound of each. Game 1: Fill the Trolley: Players take a shopping trolley each, and the picture cards are scattered face down on the table. Players take it turns to choose a picture card. The player names the item of food and then both listens to and ‘feels’ the initial sound as the mouth produces the sound (multisensory). The player looks to see if s/he has that sound in his/her trolley. If so, the picture is placed in the trolley, over that letter. If a player takes a food item that begins with a sound that either s/he does not have on his/her board, or that s/he already has, then the picture should be placed back face down on the table. The winner is the player that fills his/her trolley first. Game 2: Empty the Trolley! This game is played in the same way as above, only the food items are taken out of the trolley as the initial letter cards are chosen from the table, the winner being the player who empties his/her trolley first. Game 3: Going Shopping This game uses the Shopping List baseboards. The pictures of food items are again scattered face down on the table and play proceeds as for the previous two games , the winner being the player who completes his/her shopping list first. Tips for Teaching: Do constantly model hearing and saying the initial sounds of the food items. Also, have the child copy you as you say them. Look for signs that the child is beginning to recognise which letter makes which sound, and can hear the initial sounds of the words for him/herself. What is included? 1 PDF 3 Beginning Sounds Games on a shopping theme

These plants themed alphabet cards are perfect for students learning with a fun plants theme. They are a simple, engaging way to help students practice recognizing the letters of the alphabet. What is Included: This set of alphabet cards includes one capital letter and one lowercase letter card for each letter of the alphabet with a fun plant theme. Ways to Use the Cards: Play a matching game by pairing capital letters with their lowercase counterparts. Attach a paper clip to each letter card and use a magnetic fishing pole to “catch” letters in a fun fishing game. Provide a sand or salt tray so students can practice writing the letters shown on each card. Hide the letter cards around the classroom and have students search for them during an exciting letter hunt. Have students place the cards in alphabetical order. Create a pocket chart game by placing the cards in a pocket chart and hiding a picture behind one letter. Students guess which letter is hiding the picture. Add small objects or pictures that begin with each letter for students to match to the correct letter card. When to Use: Literacy Centers – Add the letter cards to a literacy center for students to practice matching independently or with a partner. Morning Tubs or Baskets – Place the letter cards in a morning bin for students to work on as classmates arrive. Small Group Instruction – Use the letter cards during small group time to provide extra support for students who need additional practice recognizing the letters of the alphabet. Make letter recognition fun with these plant letter cards! This low-prep activity is easy for teachers to prepare. Teachers just simply print, cut, and laminate for durability. The letter cards fit perfectly in a task box for effortless setup, cleanup, and storage. Skills Assessed: These cards, depending on the materials added, can assess both letter recognition of capital and lowercase letters as well as identifying beginning sounds.
