Before the groups work independently you will model the research process to complete the projects with a guided powerpoint activity which will cover broader characteristics of animals (structures and functions). Once you’ve modeled the activity, they will complete the rest of the presentation on their own for the remainder of the class period. The next day, students will be allowed to work in their groups. Young students can have fun counting to ten with these Zoo Build It Up! Counting Mats. Each build it counting mat features a unique zoo animal for students to build a tower of blocks or cubes for the purpose of counting up to 10. These mats also make a great fine motor activity for preschool and kindergarten students. What is Included: This resource includes a total of eleven build it counting mats with a wide variety of zoo animals. The themes include zebras, alligators, penguins, tigers, lions, and more! The bold and colorful zoo animal images will allow students to have fun with and stay engaged with practicing counting to 10. How to Use: Students will use one build it up mat and will be required to use a set of stackable cubes or building blocks. Students will look at a number on one of the zoo animals and then stack the stackable cubes or building blocks up to that number. For example, if the number the student sees is 4, then the student will stack or build 4 blocks on top of that number. When to Use: Morning Tubs and Baskets - The teacher can place the mats and counting cubes or building blocks inside a morning bin for students to work on while they wait for their classmates to arrive to class. Math Center - The teacher can place the mats and counting cubes or building blocks in a math center for students to complete independently or with a partner. Small Group Activity - The teacher can pull aside a small group of students who need extra practice with counting to 10.
