In this unit, students will read about how to keep the community in which they live in clean and the importance of being apart of a clean community. We've all heard of the terms: reuse, reduce, and recycle. Students will be able to understand the importance of these terms and how to recycle objects. There is a question about if kids today are healthier or less healthy and students will need to explain their reasoning. Many communities have a farmer's market with fresh fruits and vegetables. Students will discuss their thoughts on if this is beneficial for a community and how it can affect the environment and our health. Lastly, there is an assessment to check for understanding. Space is one of those topics that gets us wondering and imagining. While prior knowledge of space is required for this activity , kids who really enjoy doing deep dives on space topics will find a cognitive challenge here. Then they're off on their mission! Including the appropriate sequence of events, as well as a conflict is key. Thinking about the way we think is a foundational skill for growing the executive functions our kiddos will use in the editing process. For this reason, a short checklist has been included at the end of page 4 so that learners can begin to go back and check their work. This key skill in developing healthy executive functioning is intentionally made visible to students to prompt ownership over the quality of their writing.
