Beginning Sounds Shopping Game

This game pack has been designed to give children much practice of hearing the initial (or beginning) sound of a word, that very first crucial skill in learning to read and spell using phonics. It is hoped that as the child has fun playing the games that the child's phonetic awareness can be developed. To make: There are three ways in which you can play the ‘Shopping Game’. 1. Fill the Trolley: Choose the empty shopping trolleys as baseboards and cut up the picture cards. 2. Empty the Trolley! Choose the full trolleys as baseboards and ‘empty’ the food out of the trolley. 3. Going Shopping! Choose the shopping lists as baseboards and cut up the picture cards. The games are all for 2 players. Choose which game you will play (first!) and print the necessary pages. Laminating the pieces will make them last longer if you will be playing with multiple children. To play: Talk about each of the picture cards. Check that the child can name the food type and think about the initial sound of each. Game 1: Fill the Trolley: Players take a shopping trolley each, and the picture cards are scattered face down on the table. Players take it turns to choose a picture card. The player names the item of food and then both listens to and ‘feels’ the initial sound as the mouth produces the sound (multisensory). The player looks to see if s/he has that sound in his/her trolley. If so, the picture is placed in the trolley, over that letter. If a player takes a food item that begins with a sound that either s/he does not have on his/her board, or that s/he already has, then the picture should be placed back face down on the table. The winner is the player that fills his/her trolley first. Game 2: Empty the Trolley! This game is played in the same way as above, only the food items are taken out of the trolley as the initial letter cards are chosen from the table, the winner being the player who empties his/her trolley first. Game 3: Going Shopping This game uses the Shopping List baseboards. The pictures of food items are again scattered face down on the table and play proceeds as for the previous two games , the winner being the player who completes his/her shopping list first. Tips for Teaching: Do constantly model hearing and saying the initial sounds of the food items. Also, have the child copy you as you say them. Look for signs that the child is beginning to recognise which letter makes which sound, and can hear the initial sounds of the words for him/herself. CREDIT SCORE BOARD GAME: A fun financial literacy lesson and finance game! This engaging financial literacy activity will help teach your high school students all about credit scores- one of the most important numbers you will have as an adult! How to Use: • Show your class an online video containing the basic facts about credit scores. You can easily search for one by looking up "What is a FICO score?" • Present the two slides to your students to introduce credit scores, their range, and the five main activities that effect them. You can print a double-sided handout for your students or let them take notes themselves. • Have a board and six-sided die for each group of two to four players. • Each player also needs a small item to be their counter on the game board. • The players in each group will roll the die and play the board game like any other. They start with a credit score and each square they land on has a realistic scenario and resulting effect on their credit score. They can use scrap paper or a mini whiteboard to keep a running tally of their score throughout the game. • Once all players have gotten to the final square, the winner will be the person with the highest credit score. This Entrepreneur Fair Mini Unit is completely ready-to-go for your intermediate or middle school classroom. It walks students through the entire process of starting a small business step-by-step. Use it over several weeks, culminating with an Entrepreneur Fair in your classroom where students can buy each other's products and services. This will be the kind of hands-on, applicable learning students don't soon forget! How to Use: Print a booklet (double-sided) for each student with pages 2-7. Print a single page 8 for each student. o What is an Entrepreneur?: Read through as a class and give students time to research entrepreneurs. Decide if students will work independently or in pairs or small groups. o Brainstorming a Product or Service: Support your students as they complete the mind-map to think of a product or service they could sell. Ask questions to get them thinking of ideas. Once they have decided, they complete the page to draw and describe their idea. o Costs to Start a Business: Model a sample product and its costs, then let your students complete this task for their business idea. Encourage them to recycle and reuse items whenever possible: the less they spend, the more profit they can make! o Making the Product: Remind your students about writing instructions. They can include temporal words like first, next, and finally. Then give them class time to make products (some can also be done at home). Decide how much money your students will bring to the fair (and if you will use real money or pretend). I recommend $5. Students need to know this before they can price their item. o Pricing: Give students time to price their product and explain their rationale. o Advertising: Students will create advertisements for their products. You could bring in magazines or show online ads to notice key features: bright, happy, aspirational images with short, catchy phrases and features. You can post the ads around the classroom before the fair. Give students the pretend money (or they bring real money from home) and let them shop for each other’s items. They can make change and keep a tally of sales. o Calculating Profit: Walk students through the profit calculation step-by-step. o Reflection: Finally, give students time to reflect on the entire process.
