Take your Pre-K and kindergarten learners on a journey through the Amazon rainforest with this fun-filled set of activities. There’s something for all types of learners as they focus on colors and animal adaptations in the rainforest biome. They’ll begin their journey with an engaging mini-book that tells about 10 rainforest animals. Created with beginning readers in mind, the story offers repetitive sentences, sight words, and colorful graphics. On each page learners will also be introduced to adjectives describing adaptations of each animal. Afterwards, each learner will have the opportunity to personalize their own book. This is a great way for them to build connections with learning and practice their reading skills with family and friends. Next, they’ll move on to several hands-on activities where they will strengthen foundational fine motor skills through tracing, cutting, gluing, manipulating modeling dough, and pretending to feed a baby hummingbird using a pipette. Along with those skills, your learners will practice concepts such as counting, writing, identifying color words, sorting, patterns, and following directions. Each activity was designed to meet current educational standards while highlighting the unique characteristics of animals such as the pink river dolphin, harpy eagle, black caiman, leaf-cutter ant, and red-eyed tree frog. You will note the STEM activities require specific materials, many of which can be found in your own teacher treasure trove or borrowed from teacher friends. While the craftivities do require initial prep work, they will add color to your educational environment. What’s more, your learners will take pride in seeing their masterpieces displayed during your rainforest themed unit. The books and many of the activities are available in both color and black & white versions. An answer key is also provided for worksheets. Below you will find a list of details found within the pages of this product. BOOKS: Two versions of “Take a Look!” – one a basic read-along, the other an interactive read-along. STEM: Activity 1: learners will estimate the number of blue morpho butterfly eggs that will fit on various sized leaves and place eggs (pony beads) on said leaves to show visual representation. Activity 2: learners will use modeling clay to build an anthill to house an estimated number of leaf-cutter ants that will fit inside their home. Activity 3: learners will use a pipette to feed the baby hummingbird an estimated number of nectar (colored water) droplets. Activity 4: learners will use Zoobs (anacondas) to create various types of lines and 2-D shapes. Día de los Muertos Reading Comprehension Passage and Craft Activities for Grades 4th to 7th What’s inside? I created this resource with grades 4th to 7th in mind because I wanted something that makes cultural learning easy to understand, but still interesting for older elementary and middle-grade students. While designing it, my goal was to give students a chance to read, think, discuss, and create - all in one meaningful lesson. This resource includes: A reading comprehension passage that compares Día de los Muertos (Mexico) and Shradh (India) A small set of Día de los Muertos vocabulary words Pictures of both Día de los Muertos and Shradh ceremonies to support understanding A simple mask-making craft activity A scrapbook/collage project for team work A certificate you can award to students when they finish Resource features I wrote the passage to help students notice how both traditions honor their ancestors in different ways. The vocabulary list gives students a quick introduction to important terms before reading. Pictures of both traditions make the topic easier to discuss, especially for students who are seeing these celebrations for the first time. The mask-making activity gives students a fun way to connect with the lesson through art. The scrapbook/collage project encourages team work, creativity, and discussion. The activities and wording are age-appropriate for grades 4 - 7. Clear instructions are included so teachers, parents, and homeschoolers can use it without extra preparation. How to use this resource? Reading Comprehension: Students can read the passage and answer questions that help them compare and contrast both traditions. Group Work: You can divide the class into teams to complete the scrapbook or collage activity. Craft Time: The mask-making activity can be used during art time or as a fun cultural extension. This resource contains two CVC words flower template. When finished, each flower will have 6 different petals with words and pictures. They can be used to introduce or review CVC words, especially words with the UM spelling. With easy to identify images, students will not have difficulty knowing which picture matches which word. There are two ways to use this product: One way to use this resource is to simply print, and allow students to color, cut out and glue the flower onto colored paper.
