Día de los Muertos Reading Comprehension Passage and Craft Activities for Grades 4th to 7th What’s inside? I created this resource with grades 4th to 7th in mind because I wanted something that makes cultural learning easy to understand, but still interesting for older elementary and middle-grade students. While designing it, my goal was to give students a chance to read, think, discuss, and create - all in one meaningful lesson. This resource includes: A reading comprehension passage that compares Día de los Muertos (Mexico) and Shradh (India) A small set of Día de los Muertos vocabulary words Pictures of both Día de los Muertos and Shradh ceremonies to support understanding A simple mask-making craft activity A scrapbook/collage project for team work A certificate you can award to students when they finish Resource features I wrote the passage to help students notice how both traditions honor their ancestors in different ways. The vocabulary list gives students a quick introduction to important terms before reading. Pictures of both traditions make the topic easier to discuss, especially for students who are seeing these celebrations for the first time. The mask-making activity gives students a fun way to connect with the lesson through art. The scrapbook/collage project encourages team work, creativity, and discussion. The activities and wording are age-appropriate for grades 4 - 7. Clear instructions are included so teachers, parents, and homeschoolers can use it without extra preparation. How to use this resource? Reading Comprehension: Students can read the passage and answer questions that help them compare and contrast both traditions. Group Work: You can divide the class into teams to complete the scrapbook or collage activity. Craft Time: The mask-making activity can be used during art time or as a fun cultural extension. This Spring Bunny Jigsaw Puzzle set is something I created to give young learners a fun and calming activity for centers, morning work, or quiet time. The bright spring artwork really draws kids in, and the different puzzle levels are great for supporting a range of abilities. What’s Inside: 4-100 piece puzzles Full-color answer pages Simple printing and cutting tips These puzzles work well with Preschool, Pre-K, and Kindergarten, and the higher-piece versions can challenge Grade 1–2 students. I usually print the pages on cardstock and laminate them so they last longer, especially if they’re going into a center. How to Use: Just print, cut, mix, and let students put the puzzle together. The smaller-piece puzzles are great for fast finishers, and the bigger ones are perfect for students who like a challenge. Beautiful 2” x 6” standard size bookmarks with 1970s colors and designs. Colorful bookmarks that are unique like these funky, hip, modern 70s style bookmarks are a great way to encourage reading, especially in your more creative students. Printing the bookmarks, cutting them, and folding them, if you choose to make them double-sided, are also great ways to practice fine motor skills. These bookmarks are truly unique and there are 20 different designs. These bookmarks can be printed and cut for one-sided or folded for double-sided versions. Printing them on cardstock will make them last longer. You can also decorate them further by punching a hole in the top and adding a matching ribbon or other ephemera. You can also laminate them for an even longer lasting product. Bookmarks make great gifts, especially for those who love to read and for those who are highly creative. These bookmarks can be used as a creative way to encourage student interaction and as part of a unique themed center for reading. You could also use the theme as a starting point for historical study of the unique styles of the 1970s. If you are teaching a unit on the history of this time period, these bookmarks will add interest to the study. You could also choose to use these in a study on the iconic art of the 70s. And because the colors are so vibrant, you can also use these to decorate your classroom bulletin board or door or other, involving the students in the process. Decorating a room is considered a family and consumer science activity and also interior design.
