Fall Numbers Memory Game Bring autumn fun into your math lessons! This set of fall-themed flashcards gives students repeated practice with numbers from 0 to 30 in a playful and flexible format. I first made these for my kindergarten class, when many of my students still needed support with recognizing numbers and putting them in the right order. The cards worked well because they could be used in so many different ways without having to prepare something new each time. There are 228 cards in total, divided into six full sets with different colored borders. The colors make it easy to keep groups organized, since each table can use a separate set without mixing the cards together. Each card shows a single number in a large, clear font, which helps beginning learners and also supports students who struggle with visual distractions. The cards can be used for memory or matching games, where students flip over two at a time and try to find pairs. Another favorite activity in my class has been sequencing: students work together to lay the cards out from 0 to 30. For more active lessons, we sometimes spread the cards on the floor and have students “walk” the numbers in order, which adds movement to the practice. I also use the cards as simple flashcards, holding them up for quick recognition drills, or handing one card to each student and asking the group to line up in numerical order. With partners, students have created their own math problems using the numbers they draw, which adds a layer of challenge for more advanced learners. Differentiation is built in, since you can choose how many numbers to include. With beginners, I usually work with 0–10. As students grow more confident, I extend to 0–20 and eventually the full 0–30. Adding a timer or encouraging students to say each number out loud when they play can make the activity even more engaging. Preparation is straightforward: print the set you want, cut the cards, and laminate if you plan to reuse them. I keep each set in small envelopes or bags so they are ready for math centers, group games, or quick warm-ups. The fall design adds a seasonal touch, but the number practice is useful all year long. Single vs Dual Income Budget: High School Financial Literacy Budgeting

This high school financial literacy project lets your students tackle a real-world budgeting decision families make: should both parents work, or should one stay home to do childcare? Students will use critical-thinking and problem-solving skills as they work with these realistic budgets (single income budget vs dual income budget). This task can show your students in 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade how financial literacy and math skills can be incredibly useful in everyday life! How to Use: Print five pages for each student. Go through the first page together and introduce the family in the simulation. Students use the income and income tax information to calculate the net income. Give students time to add up the monthly expenses in each budget (single-income vs dual-income). Discuss what expenses change when both parents work and if those seem reasonable or not. Have students complete the calculations to compare the two budgets on the fourth page. NOTE: In this simulation, there is almost no difference in money left over if both parents work since the extra income is used to pay for childcare, a second car, a cleaner, etc. That does not mean this is always the case! Use the prompts on the fifth page to have a class discussion about this topic. Then, students write their final opinion in a paragraph to sum up their learning. They may have ideas for how to change this budget or scenario to make having both parents work be more financially beneficial. I have included blank spreadsheets as well if you want your students to create their own budgets using salaries and expenses from your geographical area. The time before the holidays can get a little crazy in the classroom. Students are ready for a break and teachers are too! Keep your class engaged with EIGHT Days of math review! The ACTIVITIES are suitable for 5th grade and 6th grade. They are great for easy and fast sub plans. I use them as an 'end of the day carrot' that my students look forward to. They can't leave for the day without getting a step closer to finding Santa so it helps them to stay focused throughout the day so that we have time for the fun activity at the end of the day. One of the best parts: NO PREP required! This is not only great for distance learning but also great if you have run out of copies for the month and need a digital version fast... or if you just forget to make your copies for the week. (It's happened to me! - too. many things to keep track of) The pages do print beautiful in color and black and white if you have the time, but don't fret if you don't. Just assign it on Google Classroom - directions included. If you haven't taught the topic yet, it is a great mini lesson and if you have taught it, it can act as a review. Drawing Nets for 3-D Objects: Applied & Real-World Math 6th 7th 8th

Here is an 8th grade math lesson that incorporates Indigenous cultural learning along with math skills for calculating surface area and volume, drawing different views of 3-D objects, and constructing nets for 3-D objects. Students will learn about indigenous bentwood boxes and practice drawing nets of these items to help calculate surface area and volume in real-world scenarios. How to Use: Print four pages of worksheets for each student. Go through the first page together to learn about bentwood boxes. Either show the video and webpages to the whole class or let students complete research in pairs or small groups. They must sketch at least one bentwood box and take some notes. Next, students complete calculations with the sample red box. NOTE: Assume the lid sits ON the sides (and does not cover the sides) like a true bentwood box. I have only used right angles here, which is not completely realistic for a bentwood box, but is appropriate for this level of math. The sides of the lid would have to be thick for this to work in real life. Students calculate the volume and surface area of the box and consider how capacity is different than volume in this case. On pages three and four, students draw nets for the three pieces of the bentwood box and use a simple scale (1 grid square = 8cm). Remind them that the box’s sides are made from one continuous piece of wood that is scored and bent. Finally, students can create a design on their net. See if they can determine what way the pieces fit together to ensure their design is oriented correctly. This is a great way to apply geometry learning to a real-life task, and it incorporates indigenous culture into your math classroom. Grades to Use With: This lesson was specifically designed for British Columbia Mathematics 8 curriculum, but it can work in any classroom that is learning about surface area, volume, and nets of 3-D shapes in grades 6, 7, or 8. While percent problems might seem easy, some of the trickier aspects of these problems can occur when the student is also trying to determine if they are calculating the part, percent, or whole. To add a little extra practice with these types of problems, especially within a winter theme, there is a Digital Winter Break Escape Room that gives them the practice opportunities that are required. Here, instead of completing a series of problems, these individuals become a character within a story that requires them to use percent problems to save the Frostbite Festival. The activity involves solving twenty practical percent word problems centered around percent of a number with the objective of determining the whole using the part and the percent in each word problem. The word problems are divided across four escape room scenarios: the Snack Shack, the Skating Trail, the Yeti Workshop, and the Penguin Performance, so it does not seem like it is all one assignment. In order to go to the next answer, the student must enter the correct answer to the previous problem. The escape session is self-checked, and the student cannot go to the next answer if his answer is not correct. This resource requires absolutely no prep. There are no accounts that need to be set up, no passwords that need to be maintained, or complex setups that need to take place. All you need is to share the link provided via Google Classroom, Canvas, Schoology, Microsoft Teams, or via whatever platform you are using in your classroom, and children are ready to go. This resource is also cross-device compatible. Autosave comes in very handy when the winter schedule is busy.
