Grade 4 Greek and Latin Prefixes word search, scramble and crossword puzzle
I made this Greek and Latin prefixes puzzle set for my 4th graders during our vocabulary unit. The kids could memorize word meanings but had no idea that prefixes like "un," "pre," and "re" could change the meaning of a word, or that many prefixes come from Greek and Latin origins. So I put together a word search, a word scramble, and a crossword using prefixes like un (unhappy, undo), re (rewrite, replay), pre (preheat, preview), dis (dislike, disagree), mis (misplace, misbehave), sub (submarine, subzero), trans (transport, transform), and bi (bicycle, bilingual). I also included key terms like prefix, root, and meaning to help them understand the structure of the words . Nothing fancy — just puzzles to help the prefix concept finally click.
The PDF is four pages. Three puzzles plus one answer key page. The word search works well for quiet time after recess or independent practice. The scramble gets them talking because they argue about the spelling of "bicycle" or whether "un" and "re" are both prefixes (they are—they always have opinions about it) . The crossword I use for partners or as a review, and I usually have a prefix anchor chart nearby for the kids who need the visual support to see the definitions and examples . I added a couple simple plus and minus symbol drawings but nothing too busy.
Works for 4th through 5th grade. Print and go. Sometimes I have early finishers add a prefix to a base word and write the new meaning on the back. The kids actually ask for these now.
