Reading Passages Overview

Each passage is written with Grade 4–5 students in mind and includes vocabulary that fits this age group.

The topics are varied, interesting, and supported by colorful graphics. They are designed to teach students new information while still keeping them engaged.

These passages also work well in today’s classroom. Textbooks can go out of date quickly, but this product can be updated whenever the world changes or new technology appears.

Mixed Questions

Each lesson includes a mixed questions section with five questions covering comprehension, vocabulary, and math.

Important reading skills are also built in throughout, including cause and effect, summarizing, compare and contrast, and drawing conclusions.

Two or three questions are multiple choice, while the others ask students to write their own answers.

Full answers and sample responses are included at the end of each lesson.

Spelling & Vocab

Each reading passage includes a range of words and phrases suited to Grade 4–5 students. The spelling and vocabulary activities give students extra practice with these words and help build confidence and fluency.

To keep things fresh, the activities vary from lesson to lesson instead of repeating the same format every time. These activities may include spelling games, sentence match-ups, mixed-up text, and decoding words from the passage.

Writing Prompts

The writing prompts connect to the theme of the passage or to ideas explored in the text.

Students are encouraged to write in different ways, and each prompt includes helpful cues to support their thinking.

Like the spelling and vocabulary section, the writing tasks also vary. These may include research tasks, reading responses, poetry, and creative writing.

Full Answer Keys

Full answer keys and sample responses are included, so everything is ready to use when you need it.

Answers to the mixed questions include text evidence, and math questions show the working where needed.

The answers are mainly designed for the teacher, but they can also be used as a student handout if needed.

Just for Fun

Each lesson also includes a bonus extension activity called Just for Fun.

These activities are meant to add something extra to the lesson in a more relaxed and enjoyable way.

They are completely optional, so you can use the ones you like and skip the ones you do not. They are there to use in whatever way works best for you.
