Elapsed Time: Perfect Day Math Project with Time Intervals

When teaching elementary students about elapsed time, make it personal and fun! This easy-to-use math project lets students in grades 3-6 learn about measuring the duration of time (time intervals) as they plan their perfect day. Students learn what elapsed time is and practice calculating it with a sample schedule of a teacher’s perfect day (don't worry, I included a Target run AND a nap!). Then they create their own perfect 15-hour day and calculate the elapsed time of each of their 10 activities. They can write elapsed times in hours and minutes (1 hour and 35 minutes) or in minutes only (95 minutes). They cross-check their math by adding up all 10 elapsed times and seeing if they equal the total awake time of their day (15 hours). They can use a variety of strategies to calculate elapsed time: subtraction, counting on, counting back, benchmarks, and/or number lines. Grades to Use With: This math project is designed for students in grades 3-6 who are learning about elapsed time and practicing calculating more challenging time intervals. In the USA, this is in Common Core Standards in the third grade and in British Columbia, Canada, it is addressed in Grade 5. As teachers, we know the major impact that literacy has on our lives. It is the most fundamental skill that is necessary in order to gain the knowledge of anything else that may peak our interests. If nothing else is instilled in our students, let the ability and love of reading be the goal we have for them. It all begins at a young age, from chewing on baby books, to exploring picture books, to being read to by a beloved adult in their lives. However, as teachers, we have a huge task set before us when it comes to keeping that thirst for knowledge alive in our students. The best thing we can do for them is build their confidence by taking slow and steady steps. This is a Vocabulary BINGO Game that is great for any and all students across any subject. Whether your 3rd grade students need practice with their science vocabulary or your 2nd grade students need practice with math vocabulary, this bingo game will help! How To Use This Resource: Pass out the BINGO cards to the students. (You may choose to laminate the cards and have the students use dry erase markers so that you can reuse them.) Have them write a vocabulary word in each space. Give the letter of B-I-N-G-O and read the definition of a word.* Students should be able to determine what word you defined and mark the square if they have it under the letter you said. (You can have them mark it by putting a dot or star in the square or by having them circle it or put a slash mark through it.) Students should say “Bingo” when they get 5 words in a row. As an extra incentive, provide a prize for winners. It could be something as simple as a free homework pass or a chance to tell a quick story about something they did over the weekend. *You can adjust the rigor of this lesson by giving synonyms or antonyms for this game instead of the definition. Grocery Shopping Math – Counting Money Activity

Students love learning how to count money! Money is an essential life skill that many students are able to possess background knowledge on before teachers introduce it to them. This is great for us! The best thing we can do is ensure we place concrete learning opportunities in front of students to really make the skill stick. A hands-on activity that students are sure to love is Grocery Shopping Math. This is a favorite with students! The objective of this activity is for students to: -Correctly identify coins and bills up to $100 -Correctly determine money totals -Correctly add money, given food objects to put together How To Use This: Help your students learn to count money by pretending to grocery shop. Students will place their "groceries" in the shopping cart and then add up the cost of all the food items. Cut out coins and bills to glue onto the worksheets to show how much money should be given to the cashier. Money anchor charts will help you teach your students about how much each coin and bill is worth. Laminate task cards to put into an independent math center or box. This resource is great for 2nd – 3rd grade students. I've had many teachers tell me it becomes the students' favorite math center and they can barely pry them away!
