Teaching tips

The instruction page assumes a folder or a manila envelope of at least 10 by 13 inches: the cover goes on the front, the instructions on the back, and the cards live inside ready to pull out
Project or copy the chosen card onto the board before the class arrives - the routine is written to avoid losing time to transitions, and the teacher works one example aloud before the children start
Give five to fifteen minutes depending on how many items you set, then correct together at the board; that pacing is written into the instructions
Have each child keep a notebook or diary for the daily work rather than writing on the cards, which keeps one laminated set going all year
The riddle and compound-word cards print their answers reversed underneath, so a child can check by reading backwards - useful for early finishers working alone
Card 17 uses the Braille alphabet and card 23 uses signs and symbols; both need the picture side, so print those in full rather than copying them onto the board

Skills covered

How is the set meant to be stored and run day to day?

As a folder or manila envelope kit. The instruction page directs you to print on cardstock, laminate, glue the cover to the front of a folder or a 10 by 13 inch envelope, glue the instructions to the back, and keep the rest of the cards inside. Each day one card is projected or copied onto the board, modelled once, worked for five to fifteen minutes and then corrected together.

How do students check the riddle and compound-word cards?

By reading the answer backwards. The riddle card notes "respuesta al final al revés", and each item ends with its solution reversed - "le nózub" under the letterbox riddle, "saugarap" under the definition of an umbrella, "soleihepmor" under the icebreaker ship.

What language are the instructions and the activities in?

Spanish throughout, including the teacher's preparation and routine notes. The cards are written for a fourth-grade Spanish language-arts programme - gentilicios, diptongos e hiatos, sílaba tónica - rather than as beginner Spanish for English speakers.
