Teaching tips & learning objectives
Learning objectives
Select the correctly spelled homophone that completes a sentence, such as choosing 'their' over 'there' or 'they're'.
Distinguish between two or three similarly sounding, differently spelled words within the same multiple-choice item, such as dew/do/due or road/rode.
Reject a misspelled non-word decoy (e.g., 'wun', 'roade', 'peece') in favor of the correctly spelled homophone.
Teaching tips
Assign the five-question examples sheet as a whole-class warm-up before moving students to the independently completed worksheets.
Use the included answer key to let students self-check or peer-check a finished worksheet without extra grading prep.
Point out before starting that some worksheets pair two real homophones with a misspelled decoy rather than three real words, so the wrong choice is not always a real word.
Skills covered
Homophone discrimination โ selecting the correctly spelled word among two or three similar-sounding options across 150 sentence items.
Contextual vocabulary use โ using sentence context to determine which of several same-sound words fits the meaning, such as sent/scent/cent.
Spelling accuracy โ rejecting misspelled decoy options that are not real English words, such as 'herrd' or 'plene'.
Good to know
Questions teachers ask about this resource
Do all six worksheets cover the same homophone pairs?
No โ each of the six worksheets introduces a different set of homophones, so students build up coverage of dozens of commonly confused words across the whole packet rather than repeating the same set.
