Separating Mixtures - Find the Pair Game for Middle School

This is an engaging and enjoyable memory game on separating mixtures including evaporation, distillation, fractional distillation, filtration and chromatography. Pupils work in teams of three or four. Each team lays out their 42 cards face down in a square and take it in turn to turn over two cards. If the cards are a question and its correct answer, the pupil keeps the pair. If they are not a match they are turned face down and the next pupil gets a turn. This process continues until all cards are matched and the winner is the pupil with the most pairs. If a team member thinks that the selectors pair is not a correct match, they can challenge. Pupils are encouraged to check their books for the correct answer but the teacher also has a quick-check answer sheet. If the challenge is correct, the challenger keeps the pair. Students attempt to make the largest (or smallest) decimal number possible as digits are generated one at a time! • This lesson can work for many grades: you can play just tenths all the way to millionths! • It's a simple game, but it encourages strategy and critical thinking. • A super way to reinforce decimal concepts such as ordering and rounding. • Complete instructions and a sample round are included. How to Play: 1) Choose which place value you will practice with your class from tenths to millionths. 2) For the first round, choose if students are making the smallest or largest number they can. 3) Assign 1 side of the counter as zero and the other will indicated rolling the die. 4) Flip the coin or counter. Students must choose where to put the digit or the zero. 5) IMPORTANT: Numbers can not be moved after they are placed. 6) Continue this pattern until all the digits have been filled. Survey your class to see who made the largest or smallest number! 7)Now you can complete all sorts of math tasks: Order the numbers your students made. Round the numbers to the nearest one, tenth, or hundredth. Convert some decimals to fractions. Read the numbers accurately aloud. Once you have played around with the. numbers, play a second round. You can continue to try for the smallest number or change to trying to get the largest number. Lapbooking Thru American History

We fell into lapbooking a few years ago, almost by accident. We had both stayed away from lapbooks because they seemed too complicated and time consuming. But once we were introduced to the easier ways of lapbooking we took off with the concept! Since we are firm believers in making education more hands on, lapbooking resonated with both of us. Before we knew it we were using lapbooks to teach U.S. Presidents, to help teach about the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and much more. It seemed that everywhere we turned there was another good opportunity to put together a lapbook. While working on expanding our Lapbooking Made Easy book recently, it occurred to us that we had lapbooked our way most of the way through American History, and put together numerous lapbooks on American History in the process. For the first time, we are putting nine of those various lapbooks together in one, inexpensive book.
