This Jails reading comprehension with lesson plan includes: Visualization (on the front cover) Start your lesson by taking a minute to think and share something about the topic. Read the script aloud (slowly), perhaps prepare some music or sound effects. Student close their eyes and let their imaginations wander. Students open their eyes, read the question aloud and give them a few minutes to complete. Ask a few students to share or keep answers until the end to compare with what they learn in the passage. Pre-Reading Trivia Students will write down one thing they already know about the subject and then read five more facts and discuss. These facts are fun, and the students will enjoy learning about the subject before reading more. Give 1 minute for students to write what they already know (no pressure—best guess is fine). Read the five facts together. After each fact, do ask a student for their opinion, was it surprising? Set a purpose by asking students to highlight/underline one fact they want to learn more about during the reading. Reading Passage The text is a high-interest reading passage with set paragraphs, roughly three to four paragraphs long. It contains a variety of themes about the topic, anywhere from history to technology. The passage is between 250 and 350 words in length. First, ask students to look at the headings and see what they’ll learn about today. What do they know about the topic/heading? First read options: Teacher read-aloud (best for support). Partner reading (paragraph by paragraph). While reading, students underline important details, and vocabulary words they think may come up in the questions section. Mixed Questions The first question page contains four multiple-choice questions, each with a choice of four answers, and three written response questions that require a sentence or two from the student. Students complete the mcqs first independently, then review quickly as a class. For the 3 written responses, try to get students giving the answer with some form of evidence: “I think ___ because the text says ___.” If students get stuck, send them back to check the passage. Vocabulary Questions Practice seven key words from the text in this section across two activities. First section is scrambled words where students will unscramble three words given a clue for each. The second section is a word to meaning matching activity. Before starting, have some students read out words they underlined in the passage. Ask students to say the word and read aloud the sentence(s) around each word. Ask students to do scrambled words and the matching exercise in pairs then go through answers as a class. For the scrambled spelling task, get four pairs to come up to the board and write the words for extra practice with the other student reading out the clue. For the matching task, prompt students to give full sentences: “I matched ___ with ___ because ___.” Creative Writing In this question, the student will be required to write a five to eight sentence paragraph on a question related to the topic. Before starting, ask students write down 3 key ideas they are going to include in their piece. Ask students for ideas to share around the class to help those struggling. Pro writing expectations: 5–8 sentences At least 2 facts or details from the passage At least 2 vocabulary words from the previous page Students read their paragraphs while classmates listen for facts and vocabulary words. CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: I and E

Here is a simple game to help children learn to read CVC words with the medial sounds I and E. This game will help your child to learn to blend three-letter words with the short vowels ‘i’ and 'e'. That means, to put sounds together to make a word. The child has to be able to feel and hear the word that is being sounded out. This game is supplied in both colour and black and white - you choose how you print! We suggest laminating the pieces for durability. Who is the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: I and E for? Those who are just beginning to sound out/blend CVC words with the I and E short vowel sounds. These may be: Young learners Special needs learners ESL/EFL learners of any age. Who can use the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: I and E? Parents Homeschoolers/home educators Teachers in class, or for use in centers Those involved in intervention work Private tutors How can the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: I and E be used? It can be played as a game for 2 players It can be used as a matching activity for individual pupils - great for centers! It can be used for assessment purposes The game pages can even be used as worksheets - you choose! To make the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: I and E Simply print out the two baseboards. Print out the word cards and cut them up. Teach your pupil to take care of the cards and not bend them more than can be helped. To play the CVC Words Phonic Matching Game: I and E Take a baseboard each. Scatter the word cards face down. Take it in turns to take a word card. Read it. If it matches a picture on your baseboard, place it in the correct space. If not, return it to the pool of cards. Play continues until someone completes their board, or until all the cards are used up. Teaching tips: Demonstrate how to sound out a word when it is your turn and invite your pupil’s help when it is your turn, so s/he gets even more practice. Your pupil will need a lot of blending practice so be patient. If your pupil has difficulty sounding out these words then spend more time practicing blending before playing the game again. This Guided Reading Book - Planets in Our Solar System (Level F) includes: Guided Reading Color Label (front cover x1) This is a quick way to match the book’s demands to what students can generally handle.. The overall goal is to use the level/color to pick books for several smaller groups. To qualify for a certain level, a student is expected to read a book from that level with about 90–94% accuracy. If a student is consistently accurate and understands, move up a level. If the student is struggling at that level, drop down and add more support. The words in this set follow a CVC or CCVC spelling pattern. Included in this resource: This resource includes one word mat and one sentence mat, both for reading ID words in insolation and in context. There are also picture cards that correspond with each word and sentence. To complete this activity, students will read each ID word or sentence on the mat and then match the corresponding pictures. Phonemic Awareness Activity

This phonemic awareness activity includes 25 pages with 12 phonemic awareness activities on each page. I use these lists (one page per week, all year) as an all-class activity. Each page explicitly tells you, the teacher, what to say to the class, and what you should hear back from the whole class at the same time, if they are responding correctly. Practice skills included are: initial, medial, and final sounds, blending, and segmenting. If someone makes a mistake you can easily hear it and go over/explain the item to the class. I like to say my part, then snap two times for students to have think time. Then I place my hand palm up, as if to say GO AHEAD, in order to keep them in unison in their responses. Here is an example of one page- 1. First sound: I say- say, sit, sun They say- /s/ 2. First sound segmentation: I say- seed They say first sound, then the rest: /s/+eed 3. Final sound- I say- mat, bit, late They say: /t/ 4. Final sound segmentation: I say- pat They say the word, with last sound separate: /pa/+/t/ 5. Segmenting 3 sounds: I say- pig They say /p/ /i/ /g/ 6. Blending initial clusters: I say- /s/ top They say: stop 7. Segmenting 4 sounds. I say- flick They say: /f/ /l/ /i/ /k/ 8. Delete part of initial blend: I say- spin without the S They say: pin 9. Blend final clusters: I say- pass + /t/ They say: past 10. Delete part of final blend: I say- field without the D They say: feel 11. Delete second sound in initial blend: I say- skip without the k They say: sip 12. Prefix BI Sentence Reading Rings

Practice reading words with the prefix BI- with these sentence reading rings. Students will read words with the prefix bi- in the context of sentences. Each card also includes a bold and colorful image to illustrate each sentence and to help students to learn the meanings of each word. What is Included: This resource includes one reading ring for the prefix bi. There are seven cards each featuring a different word with the prefix bi. The words included in this set are: bicycle, bisects, binoculars, bilingual, bifocals, bipedal, and biannual. When to Use Early Finishers - If students finish their work early, they can use these reading rings for extra practice. Small Group Work - Teachers can use these reading rings to target small groups of students who need more practice reading words with prefixes. Independent Practice - Students can work independently at their desks to read this set of prefix cards. Morning Work - Students can read and review this reading ring for morning work as their classmates arrive to class. How to Make: Teachers will print out the pages and cut each card apart. Once cut apart, the teacher can choose to laminate the cards for durability. Then, use a hole punch to punch a hole in the top left corner of the card. Place the cards on a ring to create your reading ring, making sure the cover card is on top. Skills Assessed: These reading rings help with identifying words with prefixes These reading rings help with learning the meaning of prefixes These reading rings help students learn how prefixes change the meaning of words. These affixes reading rings are a low prep activity for teachers to prepare for students to use. Once created, these cards can be used over and over to practice reading words with prefixes in the context of a sentence.
