Garrett Morgan - Inventor Garrett Morgan - Inventor: What an interesting story for Black History Month observed every February across the U.S.! This book about Garrett Morgan, an African-American inventor, tells the story of Morgan and his important inventions: a belt fastener for sewing machines, a gas mask, a traffic signal, and a hair-straightening chemical among others. He is also known for developing a water intake tunnel to help save workers who were trapped fifty feet beneath Lake Erie. Morgan co-founded the Cleveland Association of Colored Men which later merged with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The NAACP is a civil rights organization formed in 1909 to advance justice for African Americans. The First Grade Level F reader has two pages of activities that reinforce the ELA skills and Social Studies-related concepts. Your students will learn about an important figure in U.S. history despite not receiving the full recognition he deserved for his many beneficial contributions to society.
