This is a ready to use lesson for adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. This lesson is based on 5th grade skills and is a 35 slide PowerPoint . The lesson shows students how to use equivalent fractions and also uses circle fractions to model the concept. The lesson begins with students practicing finding equivalent fractions and then builds on this skill to incorporate addition of fractions. Circle fraction models are used to illustrate why fractions without a common denominator can't be added until a common denominator is used. Several examples are given and the procedure for finding a common denominator with equivalent fractions is show step by step. Students are then asked to try one on their own. Next students are show 2 examples of the same procedure except for subtraction of fractions. Students are then asked to try 2 on their own. This is an Anti-Communist Frenzy in 1950s (McCarthyism) Lesson Plan. National Curriculum Standards: Learners will understand the impact across time and place of key historical forces, such as nationalism, imperialism, globalization, leadership, revolution, wars, concepts of rights and responsibilities, and religion. Specific Objectives: To analyze and evaluate the methods of interrogation of the McCarthy Era. To interview past historical characters. Materials: The worksheet provided here. Procedure: After a general lesson on the Cold War, it is important to understand how the Cold War affected Americans for a US History Class. After the Cold War lesson is over, explain briefly how people feared communism. Anyone suspected of being a communist was interrogated or put on a blacklist. Then tell the class that they’ll be FBI agents looking for communist spies. You are looking for at least two of them but there could be more. They will interrogate suspects and execute whoever they want. They should follow the instructions given on the worksheet which is self-explanatory. It is preferable that the class work in pairs for this activity. After they are done, ask them who they thought were the real spies. (Real spies were the Rosenberg’s and Alger Hiss. Give them away at the end after they have shared who they executed). Ask them how they selected their suspects and finally ask them whether the whole process was fair or not. Mention that even though after several decades when archives were released, we found that those three were real spies, the evidence provided at the time was circumstantial.

Vaping and Peer Pressure SEL Lesson

In this lesson, students will first listen to an NPR podcast of vaping and the teenage brain (link in slides included). They will also read and analyze a story that has to do with a fictional character who ends up vaping and interacts with a number of different people. Students will need to assign responsibility and blame in terms of what happened to Susan. Students will also need to explain why they ranked the way they did for each of the characters in the story. Nobody can have 0% nor 100% in the ranking students decide. There is a ranking order sheet on the second page of the story that can be used for this purpose. This is a higher-order activity where students will be analyzing different peer pressure situations to assign responsibility to different people and there is no right or wrong answer. There is also a 5 slide PowerPoint presentation to guide the lesson from start to finish as well as a lesson outline. The lesson can be taught within a 30-45 period class based on the amount of discussion you encourage. At the end of the lesson students will have a chance to share their ranking and state their reasoning.

What Motivates You? SEL Lesson Plan with Student Survey and Answer Handouts

In this motivation lesson plan, students will learn about extrinsic versus intrinsic motivation. There is a PPT slide presentation with animation on most slides to full engagement (could be converted to a Google Slide presentation) to learn about both types of motivation-extrinsic and intrinsic. There are 2 video clips (The Office video clip is cropped so there is no inappropriate language and there is a Secret Life of Pets trailer-both via Videolink.) There is a student survey as well as an answer score sheet. In this survey students will answer 10 questions in a range of 1-4, where 1 represents "not at all me" and 4 represents "that's totally me." Students will be able to score their answers with the included answer sheet to determine their dominant motivational style. Included is also a process on how to increase either intrinsic or extrinsic motivational style. Such process involves asking themselves a series of questions (7 questions) to target what they could do to increase their weaker motivational style since both styles are needed.
