Quadrilaterals Activity

This fun frame activity is perfect for teaching 3rd graders the concept of quadrilaterals. It would also be great as a review for 4th graders. Quadrilaterals can be a difficult concept for students to grasp. This fun activity helps students differentiate the attributes of different shapes. Students will use the frame to put shapes in different categories. Those categories are shapes that 4 right angles, shapes where the opposite sides have an equal length, shapes where the opposite sides are parallel, and shapes that have 4 equal sides. There also is a spot for students to show the shape that doesn't fit any of the attributes. There are two options for completing this activity. Students could cut out the given shapes and glue them in the correct section of the frame. Or, you could have students draw the shapes themselves. This can be more difficult with younger students. My example would help you see how it could be completed.

Fast Fact Squares: A strategic game of math facts! Be the player with the most squares at the end of the game by adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing. This game is great for a variety of ages, whether they are just learning their addition facts (adding 1 through 6), are practicing all of their addition, subtraction, multiplication and/or division facts, for those who know all of their facts but are practicing their fluency...or for those who just like strategy games! This game is great to incorporate into your math lesson or throughout the day as a fast finisher activity. Students and teachers alike will also love it as an indoor recess game . Students may not even realize they are practicing their facts or how much strategy is really involved! Materials Needed: • Game Board •2 dice •Pen or pencil Object of the Game : •To be the player with the most colored squares How to Play: Decide which player goes first by rolling the dice. The person with the highest roll goes first First player rolls both dice. They may either add, subtract, multiply or divide the dice. Player finds their answer on the game board and draws ONE line by connecting any two dots that surround that number. Next player’s turn Play continues back and forth When a player connects two dots that closes off a square, they color in the square and earn a point. This player gets to roll again! Once game board has all squares colored in, player with the most points wins! Examples •Player rolls a ”6” and a “2” •Connect dots that surround a “4” (6 – 2 = 4) •Connect dots that surround a ”12” (6 x 2 = 12) •Connect dots that surround a “3” (6 ➗ 2 = 3) •Connect dots that surround an “8” (6 + 2 = 8) Challenge •Another option for keeping score is that each player earns the points that they square off. •For example, if a player squares off a “12” square, that player earns 12 points. •This adds in more strategy for squaring off higher numbers as well as additional practice for adding!

Decimal Numbers and their Names – to Thousandths Learning to say a number’s proper name is an important step in understanding place value. When a student sees .1, it can be read it as “point 1” but does the student know what that means - that is represents “one tenth?” This material can be used as a card sort or memory game where the decimal number is matched to the corresponding place value name (e.g. “five tenths” and “.5” are a match). The purpose is to practice saying the decimal number’s name and be able to associate the words with the number. Encourage the student to read the number as if it were a whole number and then say the decimal place value of the last (right-most) number. For example, .25 would be read as “twenty five hundredths.” When adding whole numbers, remind students that the decimal point is read as “and.” For example, 2.13 would be read as “two and thirteen hundredths.” Material includes: • Decimal place value strips with numeric values and place value names (to be used as a reference for the card sort or memory game) • Three sets of differentiated number/name cards – each set is increasingly more challenging by adding another place value or whole numbers o Set 1: 15 numbers and corresponding name cards in tenths and hundredths places o Set 2: 15 numbers and corresponding name cards in hundredths and thousandths places o Set 3: 15 numbers and corresponding name cards with whole numbers and tenths, hundredths, and thousandths places o Two versions of each of the three sets is provided black and white colored – each set has a different color border • Recording sheet • Blank cards (a few extra cards for students to create their own numbers and write the names, or challenge a friend to do so) • Answer key Instructions The cards can be used for one of the activities below, or however you or your students imagine!
